    Default In Praise of Stairs

New school building this year. I'm on the third floor. 4 flights of 16 steps to get there.

I decided at the start of the year that I would run them two at a time, every time, instead of walking or jogging them. It's 4 times a day, but it ends up being more like 6 or 8 because before school or during my planning I'll do a couple of gratuitous stair runs just to blow off some energy.

Running them got a little old, so I started hopping up them two at a time a couple times a day last week. One of my students, a cross country kid, wanted to race up them, hopping. the principal was walking down them and had to step aside; he didn't know what to think at first, but later decided it was a fine example of bonding.

    stairs are cool.

(btw sprint power is up from this stupidity...without doing on the bike sprints...sprints would have done this anyway, but wouldn't help when I've been sitting at my desk for an hour and just need to move, you know)

My last job was in a 12 story office. For a couple years, we'd run stairs at lunch one day a week.
    12 up, 12 down
    Then 11 up, 11 down
    Then 10 up, 10 down
    And so on.

I could usually get to the 6-ish range before my legs turned to jelly.
One day a few of us did the whole shebang. Took forever.

Those were some painful 12 mile rides home that night too.

At a previous job, my office was on the 22nd flloor. I never used the elevator in that building, ever.

My office now is on the 3rd floor. I am much less fit, and 15 pounds heavier.

I enjoyed those stairs (that sounds odd to see in print!).

    Oh, I am weird.

Make french press coffee while conducting class discussion

Adopt character voices while reading passages before posing a seminar question

Will say the first thing that pops into my head often, for the purposes of making a darkly ironic joke that connects to discussion or illustrates a point.

Guilty of connecting almost anything to the Walking Dead or True Blood to illustrate a point about ethics, and making it stick.

Prone to rattling off a quotation in Latin or Greek and then quickly explaining the allusion and why it matters to whatever point we're on at the moment.

Will reference "Bad Girls Club" at will.

    Puns.

    Hop and run stairs.

Have a finger puppet of a Bull. If student makes a claim or raises an interpretation without presenting sufficient and compelling evidence, I raise the finger with said puppet. Student then presents evidence or withdraws the claim.

Weird as fuck, but that's ok.

Worked on 3rd floor for 16 years and only used the elevator once (down) to steal office furniture. It's awkward to greet someone entering 1st floor elevator then take the stairs which exit in front of them exiting the 3rd floor and they proclaim "I need to take the stairs more often". I usually smile and say "they're right there". I realize some people have conditions that prevent this, but most of the time it's just lazy habit - the same people that push the automatic handicap button to open the entrance door. Lately I've been adding a 2pm round of up4down4x5 to metabolize lunch and shake off chocolate cravings. God bless simple machines.

4th floor walk up. Probably ten times a day. Groceries, laundry, 30 lbs of dog food. Stairs one at a time is for short folk.

At that stuff seems perfectly appropriate to me, except the first for which I would fire you.

Only 5 flights for me, at least twice a day. It just occurred to me that my prior employer was also on the 5th floor, but in that building I had to carry my bike up the stairs and store it on the landing. I prefer one step at a time because I wear flip flops from the locker room to my desk.

I would fire you for making coffee in your high school class. Completely inappropriate behavior for a high school teacher. Also, since I'm assuming you can't possibly be sharing it with your students, pretty darn rude as well. If you are sharing it with the students, I'd do my best to have your certification yanked.

Back on topic- stairs are great, sadly only one flight at school.

This is sort of bizarre, you'd take his certification for serving coffee while his school district has probably sold the lunchroom to local coke or Pepsi Bottler?

Mormons don't drink coffee. The issue for Mr. Bobqzz must be that he's imposing his religion in a public institution.

If coffee is the worst of our sins (against students, society or God) I'll take my chances. I own stock in Pepsi and do my best to keep the Diet Pepsi name brand afloat. And the amount of other garbage we pour into our bodies (as documented http://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum...ged-11551.html here) makes coffee seem pretty trivial.

I went to a pretty strict private/parochial school in Wisconsin growing up. The teachers all drank coffee and many of them did it in the classroom. It never ever occurred to anyone that this was inappropriate, and this was at a school that found virtually everything about our existence and the thoughts and desires and lusts in our minds to be inappropriate.

I can't believe this is a serious post about coffee. I certainly hope it's not. The Mormons I fly with are awesome and just smile when I goad them with comments about my own lifestyle choices.

I think I'll go for a jog now in Fayetteville, NC and walk up the stairs to my room when I'm done. And then drink another DP.

    Back on track:

    I've always entertained adding something like this to my winter training;

However the thought of the amount of muscle soreness I would have afterwards, always deters me.
