Lug and Bilaminate Brass Brazing Demonstration In Toronto Area?
I have been practising brass lug and sleeve brazing with little success. With a lot of practice, I have become a decent brass fillet brazer and lug brazer using silver but I feel like I am getting nowhere with lug brazing with brass. I have cut a bunch of 4130 tube sleeves 1-3" long as my practice pieces. I am using a Victor J28 torch with a # 3 and #4 tip with Oxy/Actylene. The flux is the Blue flavor from Henry James(can't remember the name right now). I have read a ton and watched all the YouTube videos on the subject that I can find. I was wondering if there is anyone in the Toronto,Canada area that could give me some lessons? I would love to take a frame builders course but can't take the time off from work and family obligations at the moment. Thanks.

I could easily envision it being hard to brass flow a 3" sleeve, that's a lot of area to keep up to temp. I go by tip ID, not brand #. But I think a #3 tip might be a .036" ID, pretty small IMO. My bigger tips are about .052" ID, major flame difference. Andy

How tight is the fit? I believe a loosish fit is pretty key for bronze brazing lugs. I'm not far from Toronto but I've never brazed lugs with bronze so I'm not sure I'd be much help. I use silver for lugs and bronze for tab style dropouts/fillet.

I'm not good at Harris tip numbers, but I wonder if you are getting enough heat. The thing that helped me braze sleeves with LFB is a lot of heat. Kill it with fire. Just make sure you aren't overtaxing your acetylene tank

Good point. The way I was taught to gage lug fit/slip on the tube is by sliding a prepped lug on the tube end then hold the tube vertical. For silver the lug/sleeve should slide down the tube with a bit of tapping the tube on the bench top, not hard but a small shock, no scratching of the tube's surface but you might see a rub mark. For LFB the lug should slide down only due to gravity, no tapping needed. Andy.
