Torch Tip Size for Brass Brazing Sleeves/Lugs
Howdy,
Just wondering if people are switching out to a larger tip to brass braze seat tube sleeves, bi-lam sleeves or lugs, and if so, what size? seems like the necessary heat to get the brass to flow, especially for long-ish sleeves would require a lot more pre-heat and then larger flame to hold that temp than when laying down some fillets.

I wouldn't use anything smaller than a #2 based on the Victor setup I have atmo.

I go from a #2 for fillets to a #3 for seat tube sleeves. I've toyed with the idea of using a small rosebud, but haven't bought one to try it yet.

I'm using Oxy/Proprane, but use a #3 for just about everything. I adjust the flame accordingly depending on filler material and method (lug/sleeve or fillet).

I use the biggest tip that my acetylene tank will take, which on the Smith is an aw207/208. that is the same as a Harris 5 or Victor 3. Approximately .06"
I have trouble doing fillets with the same tip, which makes sense because it's far too much heat

The rule of thumb is if the flame size and sound doesn't make you think of Apocalypse Now it's too small.

Thanks y'all. Using a Victor torch so will try and get my hands on a #3.

You might want to also soften up the flame a bit, and if you are used to tight neutral flame fillets- physically back the torch up some.

This is the most useful advice I've gotten in quite some time. Thanks.

So THIS is why I'm liking the #4 tip so much better than the #2...

Love it! I use a #2 tip. Works well for me…
