Default Toyota Rav4 or Honda CR-V (or another Subaru Outback)

Looking for some real world advice if anyone already owns the 2020 versions of these vehicles. I am done (about 99% of the way there) with Subaru.

Our new 2000 made it to about 75,000 before blowing the head gasket(s). We had purchased the 7year/100k extended warranty so it was covered. The car made it to about 135,000 miles and 9 years before we got another new one mentioned below. In the 9 years we owned the car, it had multiple problems (sunroof motor, oil leaks, transmission leaks, CV axle boots etc.) and most were covered under the warranty so we kept it because my wife was the daily driver and liked it.

While visiting the 2009 Auto show in NYC, I noticed the new 2010 model was much bigger and that my wife would hate it so I started looking for a new 2009 leftover. My wife was still using a car for her daily commute (I used mass transit), she still loved the Outback, so we purchased another limited edition 2009MY which was essentially the same as our 2000MY Outback. This car has had similar issues along the way with many covered under the same 7year/100k extended warranty. And now that we are at the 105,000 mile and 10 year and 8 month mark, the head gasket on one side is blown, there is a oil leak somewhere else, it needs the 105,000 service and a few other items (i.e. bushings) which add up to over $5,000 and not worth it.

My wife wants another Outback mostly because she does not like change but said she would be open to other options because we have had so many issues with 2 Outbacks. She really could care less about cars and wants something good in the snow (AWD is a must), not too big, and not too small. Must fit 2 road bikes (with wheels off if needed) and luggage in the back with rear seats down.

I too could care less about cars unless I had a Ferrari 250GT SWB to race on the weekends. I also want something good in the snow, not too big, not too small, and reliable.

We only have 1 car and plan to remain that way since neither of us use it for commuting now but that my change as I am looking for a new job (she walks 6-8 minutes across a park to get to work).

A friend has a Mazda CX5 which we have used/borrowed and like but with no Mazda dealers close to us this option is out.
We can easily afford a Volvo V60 cross country (or anything similar) but we garage our car and the parking valets love to scratch/dent/damage cars especially the more expensive ones.
The VW Golf all-trac is nice but small, expensive for what it is, and has reliability issues.
We considered the Prius (now with an AWD option) but my wife hates the new style (especially the back end) and we keep cars forever.

I think this leaves us with two options unless someone else has an option I missed:

    2020 Honda CR-V
Pros: Fine if not boring looks, good cargo space, good passenger space, decent ride, and known quality.
Cons: Smaller 4cyl turbo engine and less power than Toyota Rav4. CVT transmission although it does not have fake pre-programmed shift points other manufacturers do with their CVTs.

    2020 Toyota Rav4
Pros: Sporty/Muscular looks, good cargo space, good passenger space, decent ride, and known quality. 8 speed transmission. Larger 4cyl non-turbo engine. 2 year maintenance included.
Cons: Sporty/Muscular looks (my wife does not love it but can live with it), good passenger and cargo space but a bit smaller than Honda CR-V.

So, it appears both are good options and either one might be a good long term purchase.

    Thoughts? Other options? Opinions?

    Volvo V60 CC

What's the cost difference between the V60 and the others? Er....nevermind, what's the cost difference between a Rav4 and a V60?

My V60 CC was a year old, and unbelievably cheap. I can't believe how badly these things depreciate. But I came from Tacomas and 4Runners, so maybe my perspective is skewed.

See below...or in original thread. Volvos are much more expensive to fix cosmetically so this option or any more expensive option are out.

While on holiday, I rented a Honda last year (2019) and a RAV4 just recently. Not intentionally just what they handed me. I thought they both drove like balls. Pure 100% meh. Low sodium white bread. So take your pick.

Well if that’s the case, j44ke said all there is to say.

That also explains the ride of the 4cyl Outback (unless off road).

I simply do not care about everyday commuting/errand cars so bland driving does not bother me. For a few years I had a 2012 S60 T5 (when it was still actually a Turbo 5cyl) and that was fun for the 1% of the time I was not stopped in NYC/NJ traffic. I find it interesting when people spend so much money on high performance cars to sit in bumper to bumper traffic while commuting.

My wife has a 2018 CRV EX-L and loves it...not my cup of tea in terms of driving feel...great mileage, quiet and reliable...decent in the city for driving and running errands. I really liked the Mazda CX-5 when I rented one for a long trip...very sporty feel to it, but my HONDA dealer is only 15-2- minutes away and I like the mechanics. I’ve rented RAV4’s before and they were decent to drive...not as much room as the CRV IMHO and the level of finish was so-so. I could never bond with a Subaru...go for the Prius.

    Buick Regal TourX wagon.

Not at all joking. This is a beautiful car, if you love sport wagens (as I do).

If I were in the market currently for a car, this would be on my shortlist.

i am with you that when you live in a city and generally take public transportation, a car becomes just an appliance that you want to reliably work. Starting every time and not ever needing a tow to an overpriced sleazy city garage is a huge priority over dynamic handling.

pretty much every car in that segment is pretty meh, but also equally meh. i dont think you go wrong with either the honda or toyota.

for a little more coin, friends of ours have an Acura RDX and it's pretty nice for what it is.

I have seen this and it gets great reviews. Unfortunately, like several cars GM brings over from its Australian branch (Holden Commodore) and re-badges (Buick Regal including the TourX model), my concern is service/replacement parts availability especially as the car gets older because GM is not known for stocking enough parts locally (i.e. Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky).

Good idea. I think it shares its platform with the CR-V so it should be just as reliable but less cargo room and more expensive repairs for essentially the same vehicle (except for the obviously nicer interior, better soundproofing, and higher end tech). Also worried about more expensive exterior repairs because it is a matter of how often (and not when) the garage valets will damage it.

They have replaced several sheet metal panels and painted our entire Outback at this point but the car has only been in our building's garage for 4.5 years.

My wife has an RDX and it's been a nice car. In the four years we've owned it, there have been no repair expenses (one of the beauties of Honda, I suppose). It's slightly better than the comparable CR-V in every way - quieter, better handling, sportier handling, better interior, etc etc. I wouldn't call it a luxury car by any stretch but it is certainly a nice vehicle. At the time of purchase, she had narrowed it to the RDX and the Audi Q3. Acura reliability beat Audi je ne said quoi on that day and for that purchase. Given how solid her RDX has proven itself to be, I think it was the right choice.

If you have access to power where you park the upcoming RAV4 plugin should be the ultimate appliance car. Enough space and range for trips but around town without using any gas.

GM no longer sends any cars over from its Australian branch, they closed it a couple of years ago.

FWIW, a Rav4 is just a Toyota Corolla on stilts, same goes with the CRV / Civic. Do you need the stilts?

You have more bad experiences with things than the rest of the forum, including Saab, combined. You best go out and check the barn and see which direction your horseshoe is pointed.

This was my pick prior to my V60. No one local, or even remotely close, had them. Which doesn’t surprise me in central Texas.

The newest RAV4 now actually shares the same platform (and possibly the 4cyl engine) with the Camry. Not sure about the CR-V.

"The fifth generation RAV4 was unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.[59] The design was previewed by the FT-AC concept shown at the December 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. It is based on the front-wheel-drive Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) platform, which is also shared with eighth generation Camry, fifth generation Avalon and seventh generation Lexus ES. Both 4-cylinder gasoline-powered and gasoline-electric hybrid (Hybrid Synergy Drive) variants would remain available." source = Wikipedia

I’m a bit in the advice business- please forgive the off piste suggestion- CPO programs give you a great warranty and someone else takes the major depreciation hit.

OK. I was recently parked near a RAV4 and a Corolla, the parallels were obvious. Must have been pre 2018 models.

If you feel pretty certain all the body panels will ultimately be damaged by your parking staff, it makes sense to opt for CPO.
As long as the vehicle mechanicals are sound, you do not have to sweat the cosmetics part of the equation quite so much.
