OT: anyone broken a Microsoft Surface Screen?

Hi, gang,

I dropped my Microsoft Surface Pro 5 on its upper right corner... metal trim on the corner of the device bent, encroaching on the corner of screen, which seems to be the cause of the cracking... a highly visible spiderweb on a 3-4" zone on the upper right; in certain conditions you can see a few spiderwebs that reach the opposite corner of the screen. Still completely functional. Repair parts range from ~$100-$200. Anyone done this? And/or has anyone walked into a MS store and had the folks have mercy on you the way Apple used to make the news for back when it wasn't so smug from all its phone sales?

Looks tough. Glued on screens are never easy. And if they are cracked, then they can come out in pieces or glass dust/chips can get down inside the machine.

I see repair prices in the $300 range as long as it is just the glass and not the LCD also. How much did this thing cost new?

honestly, any of those pop-up or kiosk phone repair places should be able to handle this and their labor charge usually isn't too much of a premium over what it'll cost you in parts.

The problem that you're going to run into is that the glass, digitizer, and LCD is all one sealed unit. If you can get a replacement glass piece it'll be a lot cheaper than a complete screen assembly but you'll have to go through some heroics to get them apart to make the swap. On a phone it's not impossible. On a big panel like a tablet...good luck.

That looks maybe harder than replacing an iPhone screen. However, I've done an iPhone screen replacement with parts from iFixIt a year ago and it was easy. Really easy. Their instructions are very good and complete, and their parts work fine.
If you can install a crank set on a bike, then you can do this (not that the skills are in any way related).

Best thing to do is go to a Microsoft store and they will swap it out for a refurbished surface. It's going to cost double what just replacing the screen would cost but you'll know you've got a surface that isn't going to glitch. I unfortunately know this from learning the hard way.
