Rotating mass in bicycle wheels matters alot in very few situations and within a fairly narrow range of possibilities. People are wasting their $$ on fancy 1100gram wheelsets in order to buy performance. Further, very light wheelsets actually make you work harder most of the time.

not entirely sure of the rules here, but I'll play. first observation is that even if they aren't faster, light wheels feel faster. now this is coming from someone still rolling on open pros, 32h. will soon, one day, probably, eventually, undoubtedly, get some nice wheels. heck, I can get them for cost. still will never forget the first time I made a jump/acceleration with light sew-ups back in the early 80s. wow. anyway. I made jambalaya without google tonight. I can also tell you without weather underground that it is cold as f*** in quebec city this week, below 0F for sure. we also made beef wellington (with a AAA Canadian filet de boeuf) 2night ago, and last night we had a dinner party in a tiny cabin on the st-lawrence, sans internet. pics to follow if I can manage. It has been nice re-living a Canadian winter, coming from Louisiana where I hardly even wear jeans most of the year.

I never saw the point of the term "airspeed velocity". Why can't a swallow just have airspeed like an aircraft? Velocity is different.

All else being equal lighter wheels are better. The bike accelerates a bit easier, and handling is a bit lighter (more noticeable on a MTB than a roadie IMO). The obvious caveat is, of course, that all else is never equal. Wheels, like life, are all about compromise. You can't have it all, no matter what the marketing material tells you (about the wheels) or what your mama told you (about life).
