Default I love Youtube, it has saved me a lot of money

People's moments of immortality - they post videos on how to fix home appliances. You wouldn't know how to take apart your washing machine and replace the timer except some guy felt it was his life's mission to show how to do it. Like where the little spring clips are and how the dial comes off and the whole deal on what to do when the timer goes wonky and it randomly does whatever it feels like. I'm ahead probably $450 bucks on that one. Or the two dollar part that makes your clothes dryer actually dry the clothes and how to get the front off to get at it. The deal with the washing machine is that you might think that unscrewing the back is how you get at stuff. Good thing I didn't try that!

    Ain't technology wonderful?

Some years ago Youtube helped me pull apart a 64" plotter + clean the heads. A replacement part would've cost me $1200 + tech time and transit.

    Other fixes:
re-soldering the clock in my Matrix ($200-$300 OEM part)
re-wiring my guitar (at least $150 in labor)

    I'm sure there's more.

Helped me figure out the cable routing on my 5801 front derailleur. I've learned a lot on YouTube and lately I've been watching Audi reviews. Lots of Audi reviews. I kind of get the Audi hype now. But that's a subject for another thread.

My brother fixed the headlight on my mother's car by referencing a YouTube video. The owner's manual said it could only be done by a Hyundai authorized technician. Evidently not.

Things that the ‘tube has saved me lot’s of time on:
    Dryer: fan cage, timer, starter
    Washing machine: rear spider assembly
Xterra: Window motor, rear lock switch
    Accord: shift cable, replace radio
Plymouth: replace radio, starter, general tune up
Huyndai: fix rear folding seat cable hang up (son’s car-random--but someone did a “how to vid”.) I would have NEVER been able to solve this without chewing up a few full days...
KLX400: how to put it back together, performance mods (adjusting cam chain, etc)
    Dremel tool: repair brushes
    Bass: soldering pick up
    Plumbing: various
Lawnmower & snowblower: belt routing, carb work, etc.
Drywall mudding: to see what the hell I’ve been doing “wrong”
House electrical: to make sure I don’t burn down the thing

I’m sure there is much more I’ve checked on, including fishing cables through bike frames, setting bike computers, bottom bracket compatibility, etc.

It can’t hurt to take a look, you’d be surprised what people film & post! God bless ‘em!

New door seal on our Bosch washing machine. Easy peasy.

Saeco espresso robot, new boiler. Not the one that caught on fire.

Steam valves on single pipe steam radiators, Principles of.

Florescent light ballast replacement (though I had to decode the complicated jacka$$ wiring accumulated over 30 years.)

Saved money? Damn YouTube has cost me money. I've started more projects than ever after finding inspiration on that silly website, i.e. canoe building.
But I do wonder what in the hell did we do before YouTube.

My first disc brake experience was opening a box that had levers, calipers, and two sections of hose along with mineral oil, an empty system. I didn't find a specific 685 lever/785 caliper Youtube, but I found enough that were close and got the brakes set up in an afternoon. Same thing for the 9100 front derailleur. That thing is not intuitive at all but really works well after I figured it out.

I am getting ready to go up to our ski club with a work gang to push around 24 tons of gravel so we can get snow plowed parking this winter and YouTube is showing how to use a bobcat to move the material around.

A CD got stuck in the one of a kind stupid combo stereo and climate control in my outback and YouTube showed me how to pull the unit. I had to improvise from there but I got the offending disk out and the unit operational.

Not to mention that there's good trainer distraction material there too. Yesterday was 90 minutes of a Kenny Wayne Shepherd concert, almost made the trainer time fun.

    I would add "I love Youtube" + "I love e-commerce".

Because as you learn about that 2 dollar part, you have to find it somewhere.

Track cycling world championships are in 3 hour chunks. I like to do a spin workout while watching the points race. I do what they do on the track, only at far less wattage.

Man I love the track racing on YouTube. I have to use a VPN or a proxy to watch them, but it is well worth it.

Armed with the knowledge from Dr. Youtube it took me 10 minutes to replace the timer. If you don't count the time it took me to find the spring clip. I popped the thing open to verify the part number and left it that way, I didn't notice that one of the spring clips fell off. Did you know that spring clips are apparently wonderful cat toys? The little cat found it while I was at work. I located it all the way across the cellar under the rowing machine after some minutes spent searching. It didn't get there on its own because it had to negotiate its way around two partitions to do it. Which also illustrates the point that Trion 600 bike headlights are great for searching for little parts you misplaced.
