My wife was supposed to fly to Mexico City on Thursday for a 3 day conference, but she cancelled because a case in Hong Kong hotted up suddenly. Then the Hong Kong case settled, but it was too late to go to Mexico City. So I am pretty happy about that chain of events.

I was in Mexico City shortly after the earthquake in the early 80's (?) and I remember seeing a building still leaning against a building next to it. When I went back several years later it was still there.

Earthquakes are weird because unlike weather events they shake our most familiar stable point - the earth. Low ground, high ground, inside, outside - everything moves.

I hope as many people as possible have survived this quake and will be able to rebuild their lives. Mexico was one of the first to offer assistance to the Houston area after Hurricane Harvey. I hope we can be as generous.

1985, I was in boot camp and I've got family in Mexico City (DF). Everyone was ok but their business was damaged. Just a risky place to be for many reasons but I loved every visit.

I have lived there full time and now stay large parts of the year in Mexico. I love it. I have lived in Europe, i have travelled to a lot of places and Mexico is my favourite place; even w/ all the danger, injustice and violence. It is deep and intense. Itīs beautifull.. and the food is out of this world.

I grew up in SF, and recall earthquakes that knocked things off the shelf, made the windows rattle, buildings sway and the like. Every time the expectation was the Big One. The clock is ticking.

Another one today, just a few hours ago. 7.1 on the Richter scale, but the photos seem to show a lot more damage in Mexico City.

Earthquake center was in Puebla which is way closer to Mexico City than Oaxaca, center of the other quake. Saw video footage today that made me sick. Buildings collapsing in Colonia Roma and Condessa. Those are highly populated working middle class neighbourhoods full of art galleries and fashion outlets. Quake was at 1 pm so everybody was inside the buildings, busy, working.
I got a call from Mexico 20 min after the quake when nothing was on the news. It was a bad day for me here., Thank God my family is OK.

    Yes indeed.

Forum member HarryBeast (of the Cube Hyde city bike thread) responded to my query that he and his family were okay as they live in a neighborhood called Lomas de Chapultepec where the ground is less tremulous.

Itīs a beautifull neighbourhood there in Chapultepec.
Some "Colonias" are built on soft ground and have faultlines under.. like Colonia Roma. In 1985 Roma was devastated. No one wanted to be there anymore but time moved on and a new generation occupied the neighbourhood w/ studios, art galleries, clubs etc.. Itīs a hip, avant garde, beautifull place and it was struck again.
I love that city and felt bad today.

Yeah, we were lucky that there was a test earthquake alarm at 11:00, scheduled on the 1985 earthquake's anniversary. And at around 13:15, the actual earthquake struck. So people had the sound of the alarm still in their ears and everybody new "this can't be another test".
