If the hive would be so kind to recommend a solid windshield mount for my smartphone.

    iOttie.

Their design truly sucks, in the good way.

I've been using the same one - without repositioning - since '13.

Anyone try one of these CD insert types? I don't like the vent type because they tend to obstruct the air too much and either freeze the phone or overheat it...

I know you said "windshield" but we have this thing in each of our cars: Amazon.com: Belkin Car Vent Mount for Smartphones, including all Samsung S Series and Apple iPhones (Older Model): Cell Phones & Accessories

It blocks the air vent a little, but works pretty dang well. So there's that.

This picture doesn't make them that attractive.

Yes, send me your address I'll give it to you. They are a PITA and have the phone below eye level.
I'm using my phone for GPS directions thus windshield mount.

TTX1 thanks that was my other choice. The sticky pad gets a bad rap but it is not understood well so gets bad reviews. I like that alot.

I used the Steelie from Nite Ize Steelie Dash Mount Kit for a few years in my Tacoma and really liked it. They have dash and windshield mounts.

Expensive, and I have not used this particular product, but their bike rack works well:

seconded, worked great for me, attached to dashboard though not glass (was told the latter is illegal in ca?).
only fell once, after car was parked in 100 degrees for a day.
warning: when i sold the car, found it left a mark on the dashboard (soft-touch plastic). didn't care much for that, but ymmv.

If GPS is your primary interest, what about this style? Limitation is that it seems to only hold the phone horizontally, but it is in a good position on the dashboard for GPS viewing and easy to touch the screen if needed.

I've been using the SP Connect stuff since last Interbike.

Requires you to use their phone case but I really like their phone case -- during a spill my phone ejected from my jersey pocket and slid across the road glass down . . . not a scratch.
They have a suction mount and it seems to last me 4-6 hours (not sure if that's good or bad). Phone can be mounted vert or horiz.
