Default frame repair - reusing lugs yes or no ?

    hi all,

i've got a frame coming to me that's seen a front end collision, so the front triangle will be getting replaced,

the frame is going to be for my personal use, i was planning on replacing TT DT and HT, but save the lugs if i can

so is it ok to be careful and remove / reuse the head lugs ? or is it a little risky ?

lugs are old pressed ones, with a heart window cutout, to match the others

    any advice is greatly recieved

    thanks

From my limited experience with removing tubes and lugs your lugs will be toast. The heat required alone will distort the lug and that's without having to hack the lug if it's pinned. I'm sure the more experienced guys will chime in with more info.

I recommend you use a new set of lugs atmo.

richard, that's the pic of the frame, would you have any pressed lugs that'd be a close match ?

also you said a while back you might have some domed end fork blades, might you still have these ?

    many thanks

Yes I have these lugs in stock, and also 70s era 531 stays with domed and slotted ends.

If I understand the advice offered here, a frame such as this (top and down tubes damaged) should have, essentially, a new front triangle; 4 new lugs and 2, even 4, new tubeS. Is that the correct reading of this?

Yes - all replaced parts should be new rather than salvaged atmo.

I would have thought that only the two head lugs, the HT, TT & DT would typically be replaced.

That's what Rich said. "All replaced parts..."

logical, if a tube is to be replaced then both lugs attached to that tube will be affected by heat in the same way and should therefore be replaced. I don't know to what extent that heat will affect the other tubes attached to a given lug. But it seems John and Richard advocate different aprooaches.

Please, elaborate; I don't know half enough to know what that good reason would be!

To make the shortest possible line by connecting the dots that matter, the reason I advocate the approach I do is because I'm a professional and have done these repairs for more than forty years. The advice is freely given to the OP and anyone who may tackle a similar repair to a wrecked unit.

What we have heh is a failure to cccommunicate.

I advocate neither, I merely ask a question because I am puzzled.

The photos of Richards frame repair appeared to me to involve only TL and DL replacement, not SL and BB, yet the recommendation was to replace all four. Is my impression of a 2-lug repair on the RS frame incorrect and in fact all four were replaced?

The point remains - if you take something off (in the repair) don't reuse it atmo.

I think there is a misunderstanding. If you look through Richard's Flikr set, you'll see that he replaced the TT, DT, HT, and both head lugs, with new parts. Same as John suggested. Richard re-used the TT socket of the seat lug, and the DT socket of the BB, as there were un-affected tubes attached to both.

Whoops- I see that has been addressed now.

That point was clear; it was LJMs summary that 4 lugs and 4 tubes be replaced, followed by the "yes" that I thought applied to said summary that seemed contradictory to observed practice.
