Default The greatest mixed drink of all - XX

This getting to be that time of year friends. Time to bring out your best mixed drink of all time. Just one. What do you like and how do you make it?

Been around the block on this subject and not being a real drinker it has taken me until now to declare the Old Fashion king of all mixed drinks. Old Fashions are a favorite of bartenders to make for each other. It is not a complicated drink however the range of acceptable methods and ingredients is pretty generous without being wrong...as long as you don't eff it up by breaking some cardinal rules...we won't go into that.

Here is how I'd make a solid Old Fashion:

    1. Use an Old Fashion Glass or a High Ball will do if it's not too tall.
    2. 2 oz of Whiskey Rye or Bourbon your call I like Woodford. Heavy pour, it's a real drink and it gets better in your hand so POUR!
    3. Coat bottom of glass with simple syrup or drop in a sugar cube and hit it with 3 dashes of Angostura bitters and muddle. Result should be thick.
    4. 1 or 2 slices of a GOOD sweet orange and 1 red dye infused brain destroying marachino cherry in the glass now and muddle some more. Don't go nuts.
    5. Fill the glass with ice and add booze. Stir and done.

i can see this is seriously flawed my friend. it's too yummy and too little, goes down too fast and keeps you tending all night rather than drinking. can i just do a 4x multiple? or does it not scale that simply?

Good point. For you, I use my blind eye when pouring. They are too yummy. Nearly lost my childhood memories ordering them at the last wedding we attended.

I saw the title of the thread and immediately thought Old Fashioned. Mine aren't all that great so I like to frequent bars with a reputation for mixed drinks and get an old fashioned to put them to the test. Often good, sometimes not, and a few that have stuck in my mind as benchmarks.

To answer your question though, a 3:2:1 maxican martini shaken 15 sec with ice, strained into a dirty(splash of brine and 2 or 3 jap stuffed olives) cocktail glass with NO salt rim

    3- HeraDura silver
    2- Cointreau
    1- fresh lime juice

But lately its been Negronis, 1:1:1:1 over ice in an old fashion glass. That simple. Lemon twist if you are so inclined.

    1- Campari
1- London dry gin(Beefeaters for me)
    1- Dry vermouth
1- club soda or san peligrino

A good margarita. I make them like this:
2 oz tequila (I like a mid range blanco or reposado like Hornitos or Herradura; save the high end anejo for sipping)
    ˝ oz orange liquer
1 teaspoon agave syrup mixed in 2 oz of cold water.
Squeeze juice from: 1 small lime and ˝ Meyer lemon
Shake with ice, then strain into a martini glass or large tumbler

edit: very similar to what Nick likes above.

    Whiskey Sour:

    3oz Bourbon (Bulleit please)
    1oz fresh lemon juice
1oz simple syrup (I'll do this with sugar)
    1 egg white

In a shaker for 15-20 seconds. Add ice + shake for 10-15.

    Pour.
    Froth on top is important.
Angostura or orange bitters on the top.
    Cherry if that's your thing.

    The greatest?

    The original.

    The Sazerac.

No other cocktail will allow your finest rye (or cognac if you're a real Og) still express what makes it special. Nothing else will show the craft of the maker. It is the gentle scratches of the file on the lug and the filet of the silver. It is the height of subtle combinations making all parts better without masking any qualities. It is a drink to be sipped and savored.

Place a teaspoon of simple syrup in a glass, not a shaker. Use a sugar cube and some water if you want a reenactment, but that chemistry lesson doesn't change the taste and could produce a worse drink if you fail to completely dissolve the cube. Put 2 oz of rye (dear god don't use bourbon or any other whiskeyr. Drop a couple of small ice cubes in, 2 dashes of peychauds, and 2 small ice cubes. Stir. Take another old fashioned glass and pour a small amount of absinthe (or herbsaint, but no other pastis will do) and slowly swirl to coat the glass and pour off the excess. Strain the cocktail from one glass to the next. Use a vegetable peeler to take a wide bit of peel from a lemon and give it a decisive twist above your drink, and then discard. Do not place the peel in the cocktail.

Enjoy. Wonder why the hydrocarbons from the lemon peel balance the sugar and spice. Ponder how the rye you chose influenced the cocktail. Spend a thought on why exactly a gaulzetti will otherwise accelerate and carve like a system six, the best cannondale ever made, yet ride so much smoother over rough roads. Enjoy and laissez les bons temps rouler.

the standard martini. that's the jam. dry as a bone.

pour the vermouth in the chilled martini glass, give it a swirl, and dump it in the sink, leave just the coating on the glass. pour in the chilled gin. add the lemon twist. boom.

I can't pick just one. Time and place matter. I've never had better cocktails than the mojitos I had in Havana.

I hated seeing "Old Fashioned" pop up on the printer when I was already 12 tickets deep soloing on Long Island Tea night.
