    Default Harris 600 Flux

I'm gearing up to build frame #2 so I stopped by the local Airgas store and picked up some low-fuming bronze brazing rods to practice with. I asked the clerk what flux to use with it, and he sold me some Harris 600, which it turns out is a powder. How do I even use this? The instructions say to dip the heated rod in the powder. Will this do if I'm just practicing, or should I take it back and get some paste? Could I mix it with water?

Thanks in advance from a newb.

A long-time welding instructor told me to warm up the tubes with your flame and sprinkle the powder on. The powder should stick to the tubes. It works pretty well for fillet brazing. Take it from a newbie.

Mix the power with water to form a paste, might take a bit of time or warmth for the flux to dissolve fully. Place paste on junction after cleaning and just before brazing. Add powder as needed by sprinkling with your fingers. Dip the cleaned rod in powder after heating rod. Don't over heat and burn to flux and i hope it soaks off in hot water easily, you'll find out. it doesn't take much heat to get it to stick. Good for adding flux mid-braze. Not so bad for dropouts and the like, but annoying for frame tubes. I hate the stuff. It turns into an evil black diamond-like substance that only comes off in boiling water.

I made the exact mistake you did a few weeks ago. If it were me, I'd take the stuff back faster than you can say "not water soluable." I do not like this stuff. Until now I have only used paste flux while brazing with silver. Paste is much better in my opinion because it is easy to work with. I tried mixing in some water with the powder, but it didn't really get to a paste-like consistancy. Clean-up isn't even slightly fun since it's not water soluable. I'm sure some people don't mind using this stuff, but I think I will steer clear of the powdered flux from now on.
