Car rental for my son in SFO

My son will be going to CA this summer for 3 or 4 weeks... Trying to find a rental car seems basically impossible. He is 19 and I could not find any rental car company that would rent a car for anyone below 21.

Any idea ?

I've heard of some companies requiring up to $100 a day for an underage surcharge, though I think $25 is more the average. Hope it works out!

Yep. Ends up being $1000 for 3 weeks for a Ford focus but at least they agree to rent it.... Kids....

Considering what my pals pay when their kids first get a car, $14 per day sounds reasonable :)

Purchase a used one and sell it at the end of the time period? I once drove a VW for 6 months for about $100 + gas.

Yeah but I won't be over there to handle all of that....buying/selling/insurrance etc... Plus when you are in SFO if the first thing ypu got to do is go buy a used car...

i'm sure there are good reasons why he needs a car, but i lived in SFO (inner sunset) with buddies for 3 months one summer when we were 19 and i got by just fine with public transit and my mtb, including commuting to work.

I thought the same thing, but saw that he was going to be in Cali, not necessarily San Francisco. Honestly, if I were going to be in SF proper, the last thing I'd want would be a car. The $1,000 cost to rent it would just be the beginning of the headache and expense.

He won't be in the city but in.a house in the middle of silicon valley. You need a car to even buy water...

That 1000$ rental is the sensible path if you want peace of mind. You surely don't want your son to call you in the middle of the night because he blew the head gasket of a the cheapest used car he could find.
