Default Where do you wish you were?

If you had to do it again - where would you want to end up? What city?

Humor me while I fantasize - I'm finishing up graduate school, headed out into the work place in the year or so... that's the plan anyway.

So if you were into racing road bikes, mid 20's and no family, where would you want to be?

Tough choice, since I have friends all over the place that I miss no matter where I live.

Antwerps if I went back to Europe, Barcelona a close second. Probably somewhere in California here in the US.

For the riding, sure. But the culture, nah.

I'm interested in seeing what Portland, Austin, and Asheville have to offer.

I wish I were right where I am currently. No regrets. It makes perfect sense I am here right now, or I would be living someone else's life.

My unsolicited advice; Save Austin for visits, Portland is feasible as a "Go". Dunno anything 'bout Asheville.

We'd have to build heaps of single track to keep us happy though.

I wouldn't mind So Cal I think between the beach and the mountains, but I think the pop density might bug me. South east France in the foothills of the mountains maybe. New Zealand looks choice too.

Hmmmm...of courses, you need a job too, and to have culture, etc....whatever that may mean to you....so if it were me; Santa Cruz area...more like up towards Las Gatos or Soquel area. Farmhouse up as long a dirt road as possible. Job-wise...working out of the house consulting, etc...because the deal-killer would be having to go over the mountain and work in the Valley.

Of course, a young cat like you may want an urban milieu..so; Boston, Portland, Philly. All good bike towns. With jobs. And Culture.

Or on a more realistic note, since I travel a ton and my job conceivably could be done remotely, somewhere in an arc around NYC, as far out as you can get while still being within 50 miles of one of the airports. West Jersey or DarrenCT's area.
    my name is Matt

Ha! I liked living in DC.

defspace, to answer your question of where I'd want to end up if I could do it again...I would have stayed in Charlottesville after school or moved to a town like Asheville. But I now know that I prefer smaller cities/larger towns to big cities.

DCA is now VERY expensive and overcrowded. Not a fan. Twenty years ago when my brother moved here it was a different place. I spend a lot of time here in DC now for work but I've given up on moving here.

I'd move back to Zurich if I could. Did it before and I'd do it again. But with a fendered bike, which is a must there. I am secretly sort of hoping I can make it happen again one day. It would be a one-way ticket.

Been living in and out of the DC area for about 30 years now (more in, unfortunately) and Saab nails it. Its expensive, which is ok because salaries are generally higher than average. People are mostly asses with ego's far out of adjustment - which is okay, as I'm not sure that really differs from anywhere else.

What really bothers me is the over crowdedness (is that a word?). You are literally unable to travel anywhere from 7am-10am or 11am to 7pm. And by anywhere I mean a trip greater than 1 mile. Thank God I work and live in the same area. I don't leave the Old Town Alexandria area during the week. Its just too painful, which is sad - my life choices are limited by traffic. The weather also sucks. Super humid in the summers and cold and wet winters - I'd rather it be 10 degrees cooler and we'd have snow. GRRR.

I'd take my Boston salary and work remotely from Missoula, MT (near the inlaws, mountains, rivers, and generally good people) or in a childless world, live in Spain, maybe Barcelona area, or Galicia.

Our pay is not adjusted for the area. There was no COLA when our operation moved from the Midwest to here. Hence almost none of our people live here. I cannot afford a $2000 apartment in Crystal City or a $1500 apartment a few miles away.

Also, the attitude thing does not exist in all other places. I see selfishness and self-centered behavior here I never see elsewhere. Drivers are idiots here more than anywhere else I've ever seen. Want to merge? Forget anyone giving up a single spot. Don't sit 5 feet from the guy in front of you? That S-Class will force his/her way in.

This place and my stress-free nature are in constant conflict.
