Default Somewhat On-Topic - Jailbreaking an old iPhone for the France training camp

I have an old, now disconnected-from-AT&T iPhone 3G. It still works fine but obviously has no more telephone function. I would like to have a useful phone for possibly receiving a call from the US while in France for Josh's training camp in Quinson. Obviously it's subject to the vagaries of reception there, which might be poor. But that's not the phone's fault.

Anyway, has anyone done an iPhone jailbreak? This is not an illegal move AFAIK because the phone is no longer subsidized by AT&T or Apple as I am out of contract and own the device outright.

Tips? Hints? Maybe Skype mobile for Wi-Fi? That could actually be the easiest option...... The device is Apple's second generation iPhone if that matters.

Another option might just be Facetime over Wi-Fi on my iPad.....

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I have an unlocked 4 band GSM Motorola L7 phone here collecting dust somewhere. It should work there - buying a sim is easy.

It depends on what version of the baseband software is on the phone. If you've updated it to iOS4 (or maybe 4.1), the base bands were upgraded and I don't think there was an unlock hack for them. Basically - if you can unlock the baseband, it opens up the carriers you can use. I do this when I'm in Brazil and buy a sim with a 3G data plan. Then I can accept Google Voice or Skype calls.

I think it is easiest to just use Skype. Does the Inn have Wifi? You can just buy yourself a skype number and get a mail box. You can just check messages on the Skype when you return and use either a laptop or the smart phone. Murphy's Law states that if you carry a phone on a ride, you will be called on the best part of the ride. Do you really want that?

Thanks for the answers! As to carrying a phone during a ride? Never. I seriously almost never carry one. But I am a bit hesitant about being out of touch with the family for so long given one particular ongoing situation. But Skype or Facetime on the iPad should remedy that.

    Thanks!
