I read the headline and thought, I did not know he was still alive.

There's a bit of a sunset now, similar to that mentioned at the opening of Guns in August, a remark that the lights are going out all over, and we won't see them relit in our lifetimes.

Also on the same day, Fred Herzog. If you are a photographer, Canadian and especially Vancouverian, check out his work. He wasn't Robert Frank (that cannot be a criticism,) but as a colorist - an early color photographer - his work was terrific.

Robert Frank was great. There are several films out about him, interviews of him, biographical films. Look for them. No one made better use of the artistic capabilities of Positive/Negative film than he did.

Thanks for this. I hadn't heard we lost Fred too. A great loss indeed.

Here's a nice photo of him from the Mamiya 7 page over on FB. Nice story, too -- the photographer was there to take a picture of Frank with his Mamiya, and Frank liked the looks, grabbing the camera to play with. So the photographer grabbed his Leica to take this.

Great photo. Frank used a Konica Instant Press for a lot of his P/N photos until they stopped making P/N in that size. Before that he used a Mamiya Press. He probably saw a new friend in that Mamiya 7.

One thing that was interesting to find out is that after his work on The Americans, he shot less and less with a Leica. And yet he is known as a "Leica photographer". Clever marketing by Leica I suppose.
