The truck is an access cab V6 4x4 TRD Off Road with locking diff and Bilstein shocks. It's real clean and solid. The access doors let me get at stuff while not going overboard and the shorter length makes more sense in the woods.

My stage 2 goal is to be able to camp in it in simple efficient comfort without unduly effecting the lumber road/modest off road capabilities of the truck while keeping the investment modest.

I first looked at the integrated RTT approach of GFC or Vagabond Overland products. At around $8k they miss on the modest cost and the GFC wait time is over a year... I also got blown off MDI/Acadia last year with 50MPH+ winds at just over backpacking tent height and the idea of being a lot higher up is less than attractive. Plus the notion of getting that far down and back in the night to pee is a non starter too...

    So...

I'm waiting on quotes from the local cap stores for Leer, ARE and Jeraco aluminum 23-30 or 26-36 wedge style caps. Way more headroom than the fiberglass caps at a much nicer cost. Full length glass windoors on the sides, i'll build screen panels to affix to provide bug-free ventilation and my SO has offered to make curtains.

For the interior I'm going to build out a platform with storage underneath. For kitchen tasks, I have a Camp Chef Everest two burner stove that takes refillable propane tanks to minimize waste. With a good cooler, I'll be ready for two week plus jaunts...

It's funny how euro and 'mericans shop differently their cars. Not that there is a better way.

There was some kind of Polizia retirement party going on when I walked past this Fiat today.

Lack of Jeep knowledge showing ... does that model come with a snorkel (if that’s what that is) from Jeep or is it a popular aftermarket mod?

Nice 4Runner, Houston. I like the looks and the comments from two of my favorite car reviewers (The Straight Pipes).

    I’m seriously considering a 2000 996 911 cabriolet.
Great price relative to the regional market, extremely clean.
    Barely driven.
    Drives like a race horse.

Some experience mostly from reading the forums and talking to my pals. Mine is a 2007 so it's a bit different.
This is sage advice I got when looking for a used Pcar. Use caution buying something that is barely driven. They do not like to sit, seals dry up, rubber cracks.
That year/model is undervalued because folks like to wag fingers at the engine flaws. Guess what? There are tons of these cars in high mileage that have not had a problem. Above all, get a pre-purchase inspection which includes: bore inspection, over-rev read out and assessment of rear main seal.
DIY on the consumables is not that hard if you are handy with basic tools. The local Pcar crowd would be your best bet for getting help figuring this out. If the locals are anything like where we live you are in good hands.
Good luck, they are drivers cars.

I ended up getting a 2013 GTI. Changed jobs and work location and needed something that was going to be better on gas. Fun little car that has a dose of practicality.

I took a Rubicon off the lot and had it sent to American expedition vehicles...they did the hemi swap and some other modifications including the snorkel...you know, for those deep streams I need to cross on my way to work

Treadonme: in the exception that proves the rule- those early water cooled 911s- ie year 2000s are probably the best of that generation. Everyone will tell you to check the IMS bearing- but that car has a real throttle cable, real brakes, and real steering. They’re great cars. If it hasn’t thrown a bearing in 20 years it probably won’t- if you’re really worried about it buy some scam insurance on it with a high deductible. It’ll cost you next to nothing and you’ll be out $1000 instead of the value of the car if you wreck an engine.
Good luck. Put RUF wheels and a Ruf front clip on it and have one of the best looking and driving 911s there is despite what the haters say.

Josh and Craig, much thanks for the insight.
If this plays out the way it sounds, I’ll share the experience with the Salon.
