Not that this will surprise anyone but a 2006 GTI is so superior to a 2018 Tiguan it's hard to believe they're made by the same company. I think I'm over my desire for an automatic transmission in urban traffic and I'm over the crossover SUV thing I wanted, for more space. Now that I've got an aging hot hatch and a sanitized crossover I know which one is the sled of choice, even with snow tires. The GTI is likely to survive the automotive cull that will happen when I move in 2019. Not so sure about the Tiguan.

Reading all of that and your affinity for the GTI, it is my wager that you would have been 1000x happier had you purchased a lightly used 1st gen Tiguan. The 2nd gen Tig really lost the plot in my opinion and has none of the soul or fun of that the 1st gen had a least a little of. Those first gen Tiguans were far from perfect, but they were different from everything else out there, and truly felt and drove more like a slightly stilted Golf than the 2018 blah-mobiles...

Maybe, maybe not. The fact is I think I do like the space in the 2018 but really, if I want an SUV I should get a real one, not a hybrid car/tall wagon, which is what most of these crossovers really are.

The more I look at the Audi A5 Sportback the more I like it. Car driving dynamics and much of the practicality of a wagon. I've been looking to 'graduate' to a next-level car with the same fun factor and practicality of the GTI and this looks like it probably comes close to hitting that mark. Sadly, no manual transmission option in the US anymore and that's something I would very possibly go with if it were available. We'll see what happens.

That's a wider opening than the BMW 3 series Gran Turismo we looked at. When my wife was dead set against a wagon, I was hoping the Gran Turismo was going to be a happy medium. But even with the seats folded down, the width of the resulting storage area was underwhelming to say the least. As was the BMW salesman.

I had a similarly negative experience at my local BMW dealership. The sales manager approached me aggressively as if I were an intruder, asking me if he could help me with anything. I tend to dress down on my days off and he appeared to think I had no business in his business. I replied that I was hoping to look at cars if that’s was OK with him. He said it was and I wandered around a bit but left within 5 minutes, being approached by no other salespeople.

My experience at Audi dealers has been the exact opposite. And besides, I personally think that Gran Turismo from BMW isn’t particularly attractive.

On East 67th in Manhattan...which makes it even more amazing that there is not a scratch or paint chip. Seems like original paint. Even the interior is original and flawless from what I could see peering through the windows. It even has a flawless looking rearward facing pull up third row. A true boat. Actually, the most amazing thing is the owner found a space big enough to park it.

i grew up in the 3rd row in one of those monsters. sometimes we couldn't get enough grip with the RWD V8 to get out our gently uphill sloping driveway in the winter.
my mom somehow managed to frequently squeeze 6 boys, 2 hockey nets, and the associated roller skates and sticks when taking us to a parking lot for street hockey games.
front bench row meant it seated 8, 9 if the kids were small enough.

My dad has one of these that came stock with an LT1 350, he's done a few things to get more power out of the motor and it's surprisingly quick.

my business partner Jeff's father in law literally owns 12 of those things. he's in his late 80s now and probably the world's most knowledgeable person on the subject of corporate taxation. he also knows nothing about cars and is convinced that a Buick Roadmaster is the best car in the world- to the point that should he ever catch wind of one for sale-he just buys it. He literally has no clue how many he owns...but Jeff does and it is 12.

So here is the base JK Rubicon I found to drop in a 6.4L Hemi. I was hoping that AEV would have a conversion ready for the new JLs but alas it doesn't seem to be in the cards anytime soon. It will be lifted 3.5" and fitted with 35" tires with AEV bumpers, hood, off-road lights, and a winch (which I will never use hopefully).

next week i will be the fortunate recipient of a 1992 Volvo 240 GL with 266k miles, as a gift. a friend of mine was considering selling it (and the various other 240s she has), but decided that i'd treat it well and would be a better home for it than a rando. she tells me it has never seen a salty road, which makes me sad for its future because i live in boston. i'm very excited for this!

yea, she knows her stuff. she was a technical writer/translator for VW and converted german tech manuals to english. so any vehicle she's ever had (which apparently is about 13 at the moment) has been very well cared for under her watch. i've got a nice rundown of what's been done, and what needs to be looked after.

i think she already put in a performance cam tho haha. i'm going to make sure all the weather stripping, brakes & hoses, and suspension are up to snuff first. then get into making it a bit more peppy. if this thing lasts as long as i plan, it may see an engine swap in 5-7 years.
