Ultimately the argument about pca is moot since Porsche became a SUV brand first and foremost.

My Porsche restoration buddy, who bleeds Porsche oil and hydraulic fluid, says the SUV component came about when Porsche executives would go to Porsche events and see all the cars that were trailered to these events being pulled by other brands. They wanted that action. The SUV thing became very clear at that moment.

    Lionel,
My experience with the local PCA region that I belonged to in the 1980s made ownership all the more sweet. i just it would be the same in 2017 and it was not.

Never thought of even checking PCA. It's irrelevant for me. I just love the car and drive it. Not really thinking beyond that. Would certainly not sell it based on whatever PCA is or does.

Leno's show is AWESOME. Hours and hours of lost productivity to found there. He's 'our kinda guy'. He likes all cars. All the stuff you'd expect, like exotics and super cars and well-known classics. But he also likes, and owns, more obscure stuff like a 1964 Honda S600 (9500rpm, in 1964!!!) and a 1958 3-cylinder two-stroke Saab. If it's fun, interesting, unique - he's in. He owns a new Ford GT, an older (but not the OG) Ford GT, a ZR1, several McLarens (including an F1 and P1), two NSX's (new and old), newish Mustang GT350R, a super charged mid '90s Miata, and the 1964 Honda S600 and the '58 Saab.

I have no idea of the footprint of a mustang engine but I guess it should be doable as long as you don't botch the cooling part.
We have a 718 Cayman S and it's PLENTY quick enough - even if the power is at sub-911 levels. Those have to be 350 of the strongest ponies out there. I'm driving the Focus RS right now - a few hundred lbs heavier but still 350 HP and it feels much less rapid than the 718 out on the street. That turbo engine has received a lot of heat but I'd take it any day over the boooooring twin turbo V6 in our ATS-V. The variable geometry turbo flat out works.

I’ve always heard there was Porsche horsepower and everyone else’s horsepower. I’m going on on Monday to check out and possibly buy that 2008 Red automatic base level Cayman. The question now is do I trade the 328i for it or let Kitty keep the BMW and put the Cayman on Turo to pay for itself and finally have a Porsche of my own?

No that second idea is dumb. I don’t need three cars and if I did have a Porsche for me and Turo rentals I’d probably be better off waiting for a manual something that won’t depreciate any more. Fuck- that sweet air cooled peach of a 911 a pal found for me might not be too much money- I can “invest” 40k on a Porsche with a 100,000 miles if it’s a peach right?

Those are both Singers, La Quinta and Tonopah commission. The last car is a weissach GT2RS.

If you're not gonna put the car on a track every once and a while, you shouldn't even be allowed to buy a sports car IMO. I don't even care what kind of track, do, SOMETHING with it, USE IT. Drag strip, auto-cross, road course, whatever, just do something. One of my very best friends had a Trans Am in highschool and college - didn't take it to a drag strip once, ever. Drove me nuts. I took my Civic Si down the drag strip at least half a dozen times, and it was a terrible drag racing car, but it's FUN - that's the point of sport(y) cars, right? I did it once w/my bike rack and MTB on the back of the car haha!

That's a great pic of the Porsches. Porschi?

Well- I did it. The Mustang is going to go out of daily driver service- get its cage, have all its carpet ripped out, get its Kirkey seats put in, and I’m going to finally put in the x-pipe and the long tubes I’ve had sitting here. Oh! We’re also going to put mufflers/axle backs on the thing. It doesn’t have them now- and it’s pretty quiet but with a cat-less x-pipe it will be obnoxious. We’re going to keep it no louder than a stock Bullitt- it’ll have a nice idle. Some burble and popping but be legal on the road and on restricted tracks like Laguna Seca.

I’ll keep it registered- but it’ll be coming off the road.

It’s crazy because I’ve always wanted my cars to be as light and visceral as possible. Comfort and ease of use was never a priority for me. An automatic transmission was as likely to be in my car as clincher tires on my bike. ( I am the fool who leased a 2008 R32 and sold it within six months of owning it because I HATED the automatic tranny and bought a Mustang Bullitt. That R32 was a near perfect car in reality for me. It had Expensive Audi level interior, amazing handling, the best braking of any car I’ve driven before or since, and an amazing 3.2 liter 6cylinder engine with AWD. The DSG transmission shifted superbly-faster than I ever could and in sport mode the thing was telepathic. But I hated not being able to row my own gears. It just wasn’t fun.
Every time I have ordered a new car I get it in white- I get no options for ergonomics, or interiors, or sunroofs and then I pick the best engine I can afford and the best suspension available. Then I modify it to make it handle better.

Well, I bought a new car (to me) that pre-California, pre-Sobriety Craig would never have considered. I spent a bit under $20,000 and bought myself a Guards Red Porsche Cayman. Not only is it not an S, but it isn’t even a manual. Guys- it isn’t even a DSG- it’s a legitimate five speed no paddles, slush box triptronic! It does have the Sport Chrono though which does actually wake it up a bit and makes it not a horrible transmission in sport mode. It also has the top of the line interior. These seats are full leather and have about a million adjustments. Driving this car is the most comfortable my body has ever been because of these stupid $7000 option seats.

When people ask me what I like about living in San Diego my first response is that I love how “easy” life is. What I mean by that is that there is just far less anxiety, discomfort, and suffering in day to day life. It isn’t so cold my bones ache. It’s ok to not devote your entire being to doing your job, your hobby, and/or your studies. This car is analogous to Southern California in that way. It has perfect balance and turns so neutrally. It has great visibility. It chassis is no where near to ever getting overwhelmed by the power the engine is putting out. I don’t have to do anything when I’m stuck in traffic except enjoy the perfect seats and the absurd acoustics of this multi thousand dollar Bose sound system.

This car looks great and as daily transportation couldn’t be better. It isn’t fast at all- but it is quick. I have my mustang and my Aprilia for when I want to be rewarded for effort by a vehicle. This thing is just a super balanced little sports car.

Do I wish it had a manual? Yes. But no. I like that Kate can drive it and enjoy it too. And in traffic the slush box is easy. I do wish it had the DSG though. The shifting could be a little quicker and smarter- but really it is fine.

I got a 2008 Cayman with 45,000 miles on it for less than the price of new Hyundai. (Kate honestly wanted us to get a Veloster) It has brand new tires on it and I bought a stupid no questions asked 500$ deductible if anything happens for any reason before 100,000 miles just in case the IMS blows up before we get rid of it.

The absurdity of someone who is ostensibly saying a fucking Porsche is a nice plain car that is a little lacking in performance is not lost on me. The reality is that I probably own the best handling sports car in the world now.

It’s not the RUF Yellowbird or Carrera RS or any of the countless 911 Turbos I lusted after as a kid- but it isn’t really that far off in character. I like it. They did a nice job with it. Best $20k I’ve ever spent.

If you've never done an autocross, find one and make it happen ASAP. It's cheap, safe, won't ruin your car, you don't need to do anything to your car (besides secure any loose items that will get thrown around), and just absolutely stupidly fun. You'll also learn what a crappy driver you are haha. It's always fun to see the guy in the '89 CRX lay down faster times than nearly everyone else in attendance.
