but yeah- i think it's a later model for me. maybe a 996 turbo if i can find the right one.

There's a POS minivan in the Augusta area with a jet turbine in the back. Saw it at the drag strip once, he uses the stock drivetrain for driving it around, and the jet for blasting the 1/4 mile.

No idea how fast it is tho. The one time I saw it by the time he got it warmed up he ran out of gas before he could actually run it LOL.

It was pretty awesome seeing what appeared to be a stock van with faux-wood paneling and a giant blue flame shooting out the back.

i think my budget means that any 911 for me will be a 996. yup- it's got the ugly soggy eggs boxster head lights- and an IMS bearing that is a ticking time bomb- but it's a 911 and if i button it up with some suspension mods, do the headers and exhaust, put some new seats in it, and fix how it looks with some RUF wheels and body kit stuff....then i'l.....

HAVE SPENT ENOUGH MONEY THAT I JUST SHOULD HAVE WAITED AND BOUGHT THE 911 I ACTUALLY WANT.

I have a $20,000 car that literally cost me over $50,000 to get where it's at and it's still worth 20k. i shouldn't do the same thing with a 911. i see why people just buy or lease new 911s and maybe upgrade a few things like the color or the sport package stuff or a DSG transmission..

actually given the shop- I should find a manual Cayenne GTS. They do exist and they are really fucking cool.
The RUF turboR kit for the 996 wouldn't fix the lights, it would just change the splitter and vent style to make it a wider stance like the 996 turbo or C4.

Find out what you really want to do with the car and then find the right candidate. I was stuck on finding a 996 GT3 or 996tt for a couple years only to realize my perfect combo doesn't exist or the owners don't want to part with their 'asset'.

LMK if you want to buy a 964 or 993, I know a place.

This might appeal to you Craig. 997.1 (the "S" version) rollers with blow motors can be had for short money. There are two very reputable suppliers who make everything you need to stuff a aluminum block chevy crate motor into the 997. The wiring harness, trans, cooling everything works perfect and you lose something like 150 or 200 lbs in the process. IIRC bottomline is around 10 to 12K all in.

For DE, AX and annoying rich kids this is the business.

PS the engine is not really stuffed, it fits really nicely.

Sure. This makes sense for folks who enjoy DE, AX and may have a background in HiPo V8s. The main driver, of course, is the approx. 20K cost to rebuild a flat 6 engine.
Personally I like the sound and all the quirks of a flat six engine. That said if I was looking at a 20K cost vs more HP, lighter weight and easy service of a HiPo V8 I'd think twice.

Ridiculous, like putting a Shimano Sora group on a C64.

I like some of the LS swaps I've seen on G series Porsches and 964s. Can't really vouch for the 997 and 996 swaps, heard they have issues with the transmission and engine mounts even when Renegade does everything. Look on Youtube at some LS swapped Porsche videos, a lot of people are content with the performance, others think they should have just ponied up for a nice 3.8 or 4.0 bulletproof build out.

if i could find an engineless Pantera- i'd jump on that thing in a second and put a Ford Alluminator into it.... i just put out a feeler for a 964. i should just get one while they are still kind sorta cheap. I don't hardly drive anymore anyway. I ride my Aprilia almost everyday.

honestly a blown up Porsche especially a cheap one no one wants like a 996 is a great candidate for an LS. It's not like putting Sora on a C64- it's like putting Ultegra on the first Chinese Carbon Pinarello- the F4:13 or a the first Taiwanese Colnago- the E1. The first water cooled Porsches are like the E1- not loved very much even though they were perfectly great cars.....now we're all fine with watercooled Porsches and Chinese made Pinarellos and Colnagos- we're not going to put Ultegra on them- but on those things? Why not?

The current trend in the hotrod world is still to put an LS in everything. I've always preferred Ford to GM V8s but that's just because I am used to them and I think they sound better. In terms of performance, I like the modern 6.4 Hemi the best actually. That's an amazing engine- but it never sounds as nice as a Ford V8 no matter what you do. I miss my ScatPack sometimes. That thing was a great car.

I agree though, pretty ideal to do this with a 996.

i've been renting my GT500 through Truro to enthusiasts. it's really easy and i make $130 a day if someone wants it. It's always enthusiasts who want to go play with it by driving it up Palomar and generally beating the shit out of it. It's great and it's been rented three times since I put it up there about three months ago- I'm not really sure why. I think folks looking for a regular car rental are put off by how hardcore the car is and the price. Anyway- today a guy rented it who lives in the Bay Area and was down here in SD for work with a day to kill. He owns a Shelby GT350R- which is the super fancy new flat plane V8 track Mustang with carbon wheels- a V8 with a Ferrari's firing order- and it's been acclaimed as the best handling Mustang ever.....well- it isn't the best handling Mustang according to this dood. He came back tonight and couldn't believe how amazing my fat dumb pig of a car handled. He said it was the best handling car he's ever driven short of a Lotus. He said he loves his GT350R but he doesn't think he can drive it again!

I jokingly offered him a trade- straight up. He did not believe me when I told him what I had done to the suspension. He assumed I'd done an entire Griggs set up and/or those $8000 Maximum Motorsports coil-overs. (I actually have a set of KW's cheap sub brand STs- they're the KWs but made of galvanized steel instead of stainless- and they cost a third as much.) I told him the actual secret beyond making sure we put decent struts on it (Honestly- Koni Yellows were what I wanted but my man Sam Strano pimped the cheap coil-over KWs hard- and they were actually cheaper and came with caste/camber plates for $1300!) was wheels and tires. If you want a rear wheel drive front engined car to handle- you need to have a fat grippy stiff sidewall square tire set up. everything else is just to make sure regular cars understeer so people don't die- and so the cars look like those sweet napkin drawings where the wheels are giant and the tires are tiny. if you don't have a 911 or you're not drag racing- a performance car NEEDS to have the same size tires on all four corners.

anyway- i dicked around with this thing so much to get it to handle the way I wanted- and now it is a beautiful neutral car that I honestly believe can challenge any car in the world around a track. the only issue is the driver (me) is not very good.

however- it does make me want to make the inside of the car worthy of its performance and feel and sound. so i think i'm back to my idea of gutting the interior- installing some race seats- pitching the stupid stereo/dvd player system, taking out all the sound dampening and putting in a roll cage. I just can't decide if I want a four point or a six point. The thing is such a pig that I don't think putting her on a diet will do much good. it's an iron block engine no matter what i do- plus i might miss A/C even though i never use it and i blame it for the decline of western civilization......but carbon hood doors, quarter panel, trunk lid, and roof? roll up windows? Lexan windows?

I already have an awesome NASCAR blade spoiler I just need to find a junk yard Mustang trunk lid from a V6 that doesn't have a spoiler on it---but there are those carbon ones.....and I did get $138 today from that car rental...HMMMM
    I'm so stupid.

    But what I wanna see:
LS swap on a 996 C4 Tiptronic, lifted and safari-ized with light pods and roof basket.

I have a new car (not worthy of posting here...... it's not a fun or unique or V-Salon-worthy vehicle) and it has a lot of driver's aids like lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. I thought I would really like these things but now I'm not sure at all. The lane keep assist occasionally has a mind of its own depending upon the quality of the lane paint. The adaptive cruise control is better but takes some getting used to and it's not for me in a high traffic situation with huge variances in speed from one lane to the next and a lot of lane changes. The auto headlights aren't my cup of tea either.

Thankfully, the lane keep assist can be turned off and the adaptive cruise control can be overridden at any time and the auto-dimming headlights can be manually operated in one of the different rotary switch positions. The LED headlights are massively better than my GTI's projector beam halogens, I'll say that.

My GTI, which I kept, is WAY more engaging to drive. The new tech is numbing. It dumbs down the art of driving in a way I'm not sure I like. I may need to get another GTI or Golf R before the nanny machine takes over that experience too.
