Jim, I have a 2018 DSG R. It replaced my 2017 6MT R. The 18 is better than the 17; the dash and info system is nicer, the heads and tails are better, the warranty is better (now 6 yrs). It's a great chassis and a very well built machine. The GTI shares many features of the R and is very close to the same experience for a lot less $$$. Drive a new GTI, it is worlds better than your 2006. And don't discount the DSG. I was a hard core MT user but the new VW manual box isn't very good and the new DSG is excellent.

A buddy of mine has a DSG, albeit a fairly early one, and it had some major, expensive repairs. That's my biggest hangup. There are times I'd like it (in traffic obviously) and other times I'm totally ambivalent about the MT. As noted many times here, I've driven a manual my whole life and I'm ready for an auto for daily life. I'll remain open minded.....!

I know the 2018 is the one to get as it adds a few goodies that were either optional before or not available at all.

I still wish I could get the Autobahn package with just cloth seats and no sunroof. IMHO, the plaid seats should be available on all levels. It's just part of what a GTI is about. And then there's the sunroof thing.....

But I sort of want the adaptive dampers of the Autobahn package and I like the idea of the Fender premium audio system. It's sort of tempting and then I don't go all soft with an SUV. Having owned a Rabbit and a Scirocco a GTI I'd feel lost without a sporty VW in my life.

Yep, the GT3 touring is quite close to a 911R. 4L NA engine with 6 speed MT. Must be freaking awesome to drive.

The "R" is more money than the GT3 Touring. Do you know what the R would have over the GT3's to command another $30k? Just curious.

The R was a limited run of 911 cars, I think it has a lighter roof. I think the gearbox maybe ever so slightly different. Anyway they are close.

I'll check them out. The one I should get is the SE with cloth seats but I'm actually interested in the premium sound system, which isn't a stand alone option.

We'll see. The other option is to do nothing and keep running my current GTI and not making a car payment. There's actually a lot to be said for that option.

I've seen a few I8's in Maryland and more recently in NC. Never really warmed up to the concept. Looks nice enough but it's missing at least 1 cylinder and could do with a bit more aggressive tires.

I enjoyed our i8 quite a bit. Was it the fastest? No, but it was certainly fast enough for any condition I had it in, and quicker that 95% of the other cars out there. The tires didn't provide ultimate grip, but made it nicer to drive straight for long highway stretches than super wide aggressive rubber that tramlines all over the place and howls like mad. Straight forward controls (easy to hop in after any other BMW and just go - unlike the i3), and I still think the looks have held up, although we took a pretty major depreciation hit on ours after a year and 5-6k miles.

It was also cool to have a car that looks like that with two usable back seats so both kids could come along, while getting pretty remarkable real world fuel economy.

The classic E-type is probably my all-time favorite car.

When I was in college, ( Cal '74 ), one of my teammates on our golf team had an E Type coupe. That was one wonderful car to drive. For the time, great handling, and a wonderful engine. The E Type has become a collectors item, but they're really expensive to repair.

My junior year in college I shared a house with 3 friends. There was a bug eyed sprite, an MGB, an Austin Healy 3000 and my 51 Chevy. No one ever wanted to ride with me. Fun road trips to Nashville.

A '70's era (or is this earlier? I can't keep up with these things) DS appeared in Hillsdale. Totally sodden day. This thing was shiny though. Even my wife, who hates all cars except a Porsche, liked it. I've always loved them. I had a chance to get a '68 when I was in college. For some reason I picked a 66 VW instead. Not a bad decision but not a good one either.
