Default Talking bikes w/ your surgeon while he is operating.. you.

Well.. Iīve been thru weird, bad times. A simple gall bladder operation went wrong and turned into 5 procedures to save me from a highly resistant hospital bacteria. Klebziella Pneumonia.
I was in absurd pain a week after gall bladder extraction. Finding transportation to the hospital at New yearīs eve was part of the nightmare.
I went thru 2 procedures and just when everything was supposed to be ok i was taken to ICU w/ pressure dropped to 6.5x3 . I was in sceptic shock. I was kept half awake while a surgeon/radiologist searched/sucked a bacterial colony from my abdomen. He told me right before the procedure he knew me from the cycling circles.. He was a roadie. To relieve the tension i kept talking about bikes ... about JP Weigle bikes to be precise, half awake druing the operation. Since i came from the ICU it was too risky to shut me down. That was the first of the three procedures he did on me.
Iīve been just released after 2 mo of antibiotics, half of the time on hospital bed. The other half w/ home care. Some heavy , hard antibiotics directly on the veins. Lost a lot of weight and most of my muscle mass. I look bad. The Hospital physios managed to sprain a leg muscle. Not to mention the whole thing screwed up my job.
It will be a long recovery but today i inflated the bike tires. Donīt tell the doc but i will try to ride a couple meters.
    slow.

Wow, really sorry to hear about that, man. That's scary as hell. Glad you're recovering, though a long road ahead for sure. Hang in there!

I was on morphine briefly when I had (HPV caused) throat cancer 8 years ago. My Drs first had me on Vicodin and Oxcontin but with what I was going through they decided to use something stronger - morphine. The first time I used it my wife says I woke up in the middle of the night and demanded to know why there was a fireman in the house looking for his wife. She said I then began getting dressed and told her I needed to go find out what was going on. She finally convinced me it was some sort of delusion and I went back to sleep. That was the last time I used morphine. :)

I canīt remember most of what happened while in the hospital. I had some nightmares and woke up screaming. One month is reduced to very few memories. Donīt know why.
I still have abdominal pain and my Doc has me under strict vigilance just in case the bacteria has not gone away completely. I do complete blood tests every week. And itīs all very very expensive.

Yeah that's scary as hell, on many levels. I nearly died from the throat cancer too, was out of work for a year, bedbound. My wife totally took care of me and I dropped from 160lbs to 120. Had a feeding tube through my abdomen and so on. Also at the time - being the genuis that I am - I had no health insurance, so it bankrupted us, we watched our life savings washed away in a couple of months. We still owe a lot and pay monthly, in fact. But I have no complaints, my Drs saved my life and left me (mostly) unscarred.

I'm telling you all this because you'll recover too, just stay vigilant and keep hope alive. Know that there are better days ahead. You know as cliche as it sounds, I'm a better person for the experience I went through, maybe you will be too?

The same here: i am an idiot w/ no insurance... and the bills are way over my head. My brother took care of me while at the hospital. i had no idea i had such a great brother. It feels hard to get back to my life as it was. I am physically weak but also... as if i donīt fit the same place anymore.

Yeah my wife and I were close before the cancer, but even closer afterward. She stood by me through a lot. Be glad you have the brother you do. :)

And yeah, I dont know how long it will be until you're feeling more like your old self, but it took me another year to start feeling normal. I had had surgery and 6 weeks of radiation treatment, and just felt weak all time. It was hard to accept because I had always worked out a lot - still do daily - but I felt as weak as a kitten. I remember thinking, is this how I will be for the rest of my life now? But eventually things started to improve and I kept at it. So dont be frustrated if it takes a long time for you to get your strength back, it will happen. Just takes your body some time to bounce back from the pounding it took. :)

Colky, I was wondering where you were, almost sent you a PM a few days ago…

Wow, hang in there buddy! Don’t rush your recovery, the body needs time to heal, even if your mind wants to go for a ride.

I’m truly sorry to hear about your trouble. Better days ahead!

In fact, I’ll gift you a bakers dozen worth of criticisms of President Trump--that I promise I won’t to respond to!

Heal fast, but as Corso said, don't try to rush your recovery. Glad you're back! And please give your brother a collective hug from all of us—it's because of the love in people like him (and jumphigher's wife) that there is hope in this world.

Colker, hopefully this will make you laugh.

Some year back I went under for a hernia operation. While rolling me into the operating theater my surgeon noted that the gas passer raced bicycles. Naturally I said hi and mentioned that I was a avid long rider. He asked some innocuous cycling related question...as I responded he knocked me out. In retrospect it might have been a setup by my surgeon to annoy his guy ;)

    Get well soon ok?

Scary stuff, for sure. I'm hoping that the road to recovery is the one that is straight and upward.

Similar to Too Tall's story, my doc does the 50 year old's colonoscopy setup and I tell that doc's office it has to wait until after I take a run at some of the ADK 540. The doc is a rider, it turns out. I am a caffeine addict. I get there with the headache already going and we find out that they have had a power problem so everything is backed up a couple hours. By the time I am called in my head is in a vice and I can't see straight. They fuss around and eventually wheel me into the room where the doc wants to hear all about the riding, tell me about his, I turn to the anesthesiologist and mutter "Just knock me out." She grinned and that's the last thing I remember of that room.
