Airlines just can't get it through their thick heads that two people on the same booking who have different last names are married and would like to continue to sit together in their chosen seats so don't effing move one of them to the other side of the plane when the plane changes, especially when the seat configuration is exactly the same. And when booking the tickets, don't keep changing one person's last name to the other person's last name and then when corrected, say oh I am sorry I thought you said you were married. It is frickin' 2017.

Sit down, or I'll have a TSA agent punch you in the face, tase and drag your sorry ass off the plane. I feel threatened.

Right. Which is why I typed that here so I can be cool calm and collected when TSA punches me in the face.

Imagine what must happen if those two married people, with different last names, have a child. And give that child a hyphenated last name combining those two names.

    A hyphen.

Can you imagine the chaos that symbol can cause in an airline employee's tiny mind?

I fear for the future social order. Now, what happens when that hyphenated child grows up and marries another hyphenated child and decides that a third generation child should also be hyphenated? Like double hyphenated? And so on. Global warming, Trump, now this. I had no Thursday grump until now...

While I agree with you. Please do not forget that you live in the democratic liberal north east and when we leave our bubble all hell breaks loose.

Having a hyphenated last name, I can say that airline tickets don't accept hyphens at all. At some point someone in my family will probably earn an unpleasant TSA encounter as a result.

At a huge conference in Denver. They've announced a million times that all presentation slides will be provided. Yet 50% or more continue to take a photo of each slide with their phone. Its like I'm at a concert.

My fiance & I started getting that question when she announced she wouldn't be taking my name.
Our answer at that time was, "Our kids will figure it out."
33 years later our answer is, "Our daughter will figure it out."

You're aware, I hope, that other cultures handle family names different than ours? So I still hold out some hope for humanity.

Acquaintance of mine is a gender nonconformist who presents as a male but, at this time, is anatomically female and has a feminine legal name.
This gets her special treatment in the TSA line (as in, she gets invited into "the room") EVERY TIME. It just blows their little minds.

I offer Iceland as a cautionary example. And the other cultures, I can't pronounce the names either anyway so who cares?

My unmarried partner of nearly 30 years and I don't share names or hyphens and we have never had an issue while traveling. Neither of the cats technically have last names either though neither has interest in air travel. That seems to avoid the issue for them. Although both do have interest in watching birds out the window...

Yeah but who actually reviews the slides after the presentation? We all know the best place for review material is four or five swipes deep into your phone's photo album.

On the topic of names, most systems fail to recognize an apostrophe. My wife (double, non-hyphenated last name including her Irish family name) claims discrimination against Irish and Scots. To make it interesting, she uses her maiden name in some circumstances and her legal name in others. Makes it interesting for me when picking up things at the dry cleaners....

My real grump is that my road shoes are in need of replacement soon. This model does not exist and no local options to try on the successor to it. Did try another shoe I really wanted to work, but dang if it just doesn't cut it.... Hate shopping for cycling shoes!

We got done by a monastery in Italy when checking in for the night a while back. Passports with different names and no wedding ring proved to be our undoing! That meant the Controller of Social Events was put in one room and two floors away and I had another! It was kind of funny.
