Snow is piling up by the yard in the Sierras and my wife's project got kicked and we are going skiing next weekend
i finally realized why my mini-v pads were wearing down so quickly on my commuter...because they weren't.
instead, the posts on the fork were spaced to wide, 87mm instead of 80mm.
the extra spacing meant the swing arm of the mini motos lost clearance and was interfering and pushing the fender against the tire as the pads got to be half-worn, and then the pads required spacers to remain useful for another 1/4 of their lives.
got in touch with the builder and said i was content with having the old posts removed and new posts welded in at the proper spacing, he said no.
he said he's going to have a new fork put together with the right spacing.
very happy with how this came together, and I will be getting him a gift card to somewhere as a thanks.

I don't geek out over football much these days, but my alma mater is playing in the 1-AA championship tomorrow, then the Giants are playing a meaningful January game for the first time in a while on Sunday.
Time to make some chili.

My daughter was home for the holidays for a week and a half and that was great.
To ease our transition back to the empty nest, we just hosted the daughter of friends (who we've known since she was 8) for a couple days, and are finishing up by hosting our nephew this weekend. And taking him to Hartford Sunday.
GO!
This post is probably just as at home in the Thursday thread, but it's Friday today. It's a bit of a bittersweet one.
One of my favorite luthiers (that's a gee-builder, for you guys) is closing up shop. I just nabbed one of his final three builds. Hopefully he's back up at it soon.

Confirmation for my 8th and final Boston Marathon came this week.

Beautiful. My brother-in-law is a luthier and it's a tough business.
Here's mine (the black DC-3): DC-3 | Corwin Guitar Co.
It's a far better guitar than I am a player.

Day trip to Hilo to cover our court calendar. Per diem judge happy with how efficiently we got through our matters. Grabbing a bit to eat at a local spot and then wander back to the airport to sit on their comfy chairs.
I'm in Hilo. So that means going to Kens House of Pancakes for sumo moco, a vulgar and delicious bowl of goodness. On Kona side I go to Sun Dried Specialties for fish burger deluxe. I love Poke Shack, but it's inconvenient to where I go in Kona. Now chilling on the super comfortable sofa in the airport lobby.
Met up with my new engineering co-op and her parents this morning to help her get moved in to one of our corporate apartments. She is entirely competent and mature with great parents who appeared to have raised her well. I've had enough broken toys in the last few years, I have high hopes for this one.

Little victories... My garage door has been a pain in the ass for about a year. Remote sucks, I have to be almost on top of the door for the remote to work. It's 25 years old, and struggles when it's cold out for some reason. I got a wild hare to replace it today. Done. I win. Screw you, garage door. I am master.
Tomorrow night, replace the springs and rebalance the thing.
Belt drive openers are really quiet.
Our youngest turns 17 today and he takes his SAT's next Saturday...holy crap does time fly. I just made the first leg of a redeye home so that I can get him in a birthday headlock this afternoon and show him who's boss. The problem is he's 6'-3" and he has me by 15#. What did Fausto say...something like "age and treachery overcomes youth and exuberance"...

hey, how lucky can one man get.
We are off on Monday. Absolutely avoiding downtown DC for the next week or so.
Probably hike with the kids at Great Falls one day, and spend another day cooking something on the Egg.
Also, some upgrades for my new-old truck on tap this weekend. Weathertech mats to replace the threadbare carpet ones in the front row. New wiper blades, and most importantly, a modern stereo with a simple tuner and USB input for phone/iPod type things.

Ski weekend with the family. Off to the mtns either this afternoon or early in the AM, depending on traffic. Holy smokes there is a lot of snow up there.
Alright, lemme kick this off for this week.
You guys are my anti-grump. I just sold a bunch of stuff on the classifieds. Every transaction was super smooth and I think I cleared everything out in under a week. I also bought a wheelset. The seller was beyond accommodating. The wheels arrived safe and sound and came with a wheelbag that we never even discussed!
I mistakenly took a detour on to the Google Wattage forums a few days ago. It didn't take me long to remember why Vsalon is where I hangout online.
Just keep doing what you're doing.
Day off, I'll have time for a nice ride and still make it to my son's swim meet. I also intend to not fear what's coming until I have a reason demonstrated by action and not by opinion.
