Almost weeks ago on a connecting flight landing in Atlanta, the pilot seemingly had a flashback to his navy days and landed us like we were on an aircraft carrier and not a long runway. We hit hard, as in every passenger was kinda shocked how fast it happened. It felt like all the wheels hit at the same time and then a really quick stop happened. I had a sore back for several days after and traveling for the 4th and sleeping in strange beds has made it worse. The nagging pain is making me grumpy.

united canceled their flights out of here tonight, so I have to drive to Harrisburg getting there at 5am tomorrow. There is a bigger grump, but that's a start.

Similar to last week. My current job is sucking my will to live only now my wife is sending my job postings for similar roles at other k-12 schools.

I hate my fucking job. The most enjoyable part of my work day is from 6:15am to 7:45am when I am taking two separate buses on my way into work. I am out in the world, in the middle of the city with human interaction, exchanges of smiles and hello's. I get in here and my demeanor just sinks. Sit in a box by myself, stare at a box with several windows and boxes within boxes, shuffle these trees chopped into boxes, call people from this box.

A friend of mine, a conversation I once had with him comes to mind. "George" I said, " I just can't stand it. I absolutely hate being here." He calmly replied, in his typical demeanor, "Well Justin, That is why they PAY you to be there."

True. Very true. Though if nothing else I have learned one thing from this experience, I absolutely am not an indoor dog. I need to be working with my hands. Need to be sweating, troubleshooting, thinking, solving, building and repairing. This desk job life, God bless those of you that enjoy it, I am not here to judge by any means. I however, I miss high voltage electrical work. Hanging out of hooks 40 feet off the ground. Working storm trouble when the world is huddled inside. Having an elderly woman walk out at 3am to thank the crew in the middle of a February blizzard for restoring her power and getting her heat back on. I don't feel any of that here. There is no gratification in my current work.

July 31st will make one year sober again. This September will make 2 years post op the total colectomy, 18 months post op the emergency surgery that saved my life six months after the first. It's now 2-1/2 months post op the recent total hip replacement. My strength is returning. My head is clearing more as the painkiller free months roll by. My ambition is starting to reach intolerable levels within me.

It's been a great step to get back on my feet and I am not ungrateful. But it's time. I always seem to know when it's time, and my heart is ever present with that quiet whisper... Onward, Justin. Onward.

Thank you for letting me vent.
    justin rogers.

Agency-wide VDI upgrade/migration was going really well, until today. Gee, did we add too many users to the environment? The one I was assured would handle 2x our total users?

At least walking around the building and letting my customers abuse me made them feel better.

    I feel your pain.

who would put a set of buttons in the middle of an airline armrest so that you can't put your elbow on the armrest without constantly calling the flight attendant/turning the light on and off? Word of warning, take some duct tape an a 1.5" wide by 3" long piece of stiff cardboard with you if you are flying. 2 out of my 6 flights this week featured buttons in the armrest, and they aren't guarded against elbows. They have made it nearly unbearably uncomfortable to fly, and this is just pointless stupidity.

We were sitting in SFO in a 777 and the call bell was going off constantly. Fortunately it's not that loud, but the constant "ding ... ding ... ding" was really getting on my nerves after sitting there for 30 minutes. And one of the flight attendants said that people were "playing with them" No, we've been played.

our pet rabbit didn't seem like he had eaten much yesterday and was seriously down on energy. I hope he shakes it today. The local vets don't offer much help for animals outside of the normal cat/dog treatment.

Fucked by Southwest system outage today. Flight to Sacramento is cancelled. We'd miss the family wedding if we didn't spend $2200 on flights with United now instead. And, the cancelled flights were booked with points, transferred from a Chase Rewards account. Not only am I spending $2200 unexpected dollars, I now have a bunch of points locked up in Southwest account.

I blame saab2000. If he didn't want to go to work, he should have called in sick. He didn't need to crash the whole airline system.

Adhesive capsulitis of the left shoulder, also called frozen shoulder. Seems to be a post traumatic consequence of my MTB crash in Jan. The thing sort of sucks as I basically cannot raise my left arm above shoulder level or reach into jersey pockets. Hurts too... Oh well, could last 2 years too.

Grump 1: My plated and healed collarbone now has a weird hard bump on it. It doesn't hurt in a broken bone way but it is a little sensitive to the touch. I'm hoping I just bumped it and it's a bruise-ish thing. This predates the next grump.

Grump 2: I crashed last Sunday. That's the second broken helmet this season. I've hit the deck three times this season. It had been two or three years since the last time. My neck is sore and stiff.

A good friend of mine, Jeff, was killed on Wednesday evening by a drunk driver. He was older than me, and my 3 y/o son practically worshipped him. Jeff treated him like one of his own. Thankfully (maybe) my wife and both kids are out of town until late next week while I figure out how I am going to tell my son that Jeff isn't here any more. I have no doubt that my son is going to ask why. I really want to tell him that an idiot made some poor decisions and took our friend from us. But kids are parrots, you know... that might not be the best idea. Not sure what to say. Complicating things, this will be my son's first exposure to *real* death... we haven't lost dogs/cats/goldfish/anything yet with him around. I think he understands it from watching TV and other areas that kids are exposed to, but this is the first time it's going to hit home for him. I am going to miss my friend terribly but I am really dreading that conversation with my son. I realize that it could be worse, but this really sucks. Cherish your family and friends.

    Kickstarter rant.

Seems like I'm always clicking a link to check out some cool product. Of course it's always on kickstarter. Can companies no longer take a risk or find an investor? I admit some cool products have come from these projects. But make it happen under your own steam, take a risk, take a loan out. Stop asking me for money for a product that's still a year out. If the product is that good then make it happen.

A hellacious week at work. Systemic problems with the new virtual desktop environment stop the migration, and days of troubleshooting and problem-solving follow. Some things work, some (that we thought would be transformative) fail. On Tuesday night we completely recreated the pool, only to figure out (late yesterday morning) that a Win 7 maintenance patch has disabled network printing and all the apps that rely on the .net framework. That made for a long difficult day. Today is the first day since last Monday that we've had acceptable performance for 120+ staff...

Not only that, a good friend lost out on a job he really wanted, and is really qualified to do.
    GO!

Exactly 5 years ago my mom was winding down her last 3-4 days due to her colon cancer coming back. You're not alone in what it feels like and if you ever need a chat please feel free to hit me up.
