Quaker Quick Steel Cut Oatmeal
I know, I know, this will be heresy for many of you, but I saw this in the store and not having ever tried the "real" steel cut I decided to give it a try.
I'd say it's good enough that I'll buy it again.
Has anyone who knows the "normal" stuff (i.e. long cook time) tasted this type? How does it compare?

It is good, not even close to the real thing which takes time to prepare. I use the trader Joe version...takes 5 mins. In a microwave. Pretty d@mn easy

For every day use I like the Bob's Red Mill Quick Cooking Oats. Takes about 5 minutes. With a pat of butter and a splash of grade B maple syrup, it starts a morning well.
When I have the time, McCanns steel cut irish is pretty special though...

+1 on McCanns. When pressed for time, I use Old Wessex and nuke for 3 minutes. I prefer old wessex 5 grain mix though. -Mike G

Re: Quaker Quick Steel Cut Oatmeal
I made oatmeal bread yesterday. I was wondering why the dough was so wet... I had to keep adding flour so it would pull away from the bowl.
I forgot to add the oatmeal.

Thanks guys.
I'm in TJ's all the time (one of my favorite food places), so when I finish the Quaker quick version I'll try theirs too.

Re: Quaker Quick Steel Cut Oatmeal
you can do the real stuff quick like: the night before, add steel cut to water, salt etc and just bring to a boil, pull it off and let it cool. Stick the pan and all in the reefer before you go to bed. Next morning it's about done. I sometimes add a bit of water, stick it back on heat for a few minutes and it's ready. Real steel cut in 5 or 10 mins. everything else is mush.

Re: Quaker Quick Steel Cut Oatmeal
I've mentioned this in other oatmeal threads, but throw some McCann's and water in an automatic rice cooker. It makes a big batch that you can reheat a desired portion from when you're ready to eat and the rice cooker does an excellent job cooking the oatmeal.

Re: Quaker Quick Steel Cut Oatmeal
^^^ that is my go to.
1 cup rolled oats
1.5 cups milk
1 diced banana
pinch of salt
put in the zooroshi the night before and have magic "instant" oatmeal for the next 2 mornings

Re: Quaker Quick Steel Cut Oatmeal
my hamilton beech rice cooker has a delay so I do the night before and have it timed to be ready the next morning. I generally use Bob red mill bulk steel cut oats.
