Oldest had a test last week that he absolutely needed to do well on. Not just to pass the quarter, but the year. Failed miserably. If he tried and just wasn't getting it, that's fine. He's allowed to do corrections to get half the points back, which at this point is necessary.

We go to pick the boys up from their pop's place yesterday and the oldest told his biological father he did the corrections. Pops didn't bother to look and check. They weren't done. They were due yesterday. I don't communicate with Pops. My wife does. The oldest said he didn't know he failed, though "22/50 - F" is written on his test. Then he said he didn't know he could do corrections. We do test corrections regardless of whether or not they can be turned in, and have all year. We hadn't left Pop's house yet, so wife went up to the door, rang the bell, and when pops answered she lit into him like I have never seen. Which was quite awesome. Then, upon returning to the car, it was time for the oldest boy's turn to tell us why he was lying.

What's not awesome is 50% of the time, no one gives a fuck about his grades, and the other 50% of the time, wife and I are up with him till 10pm doing homework that should have already been done and turned in.

This has been a year long struggle. 2 more weeks. It's been made official that the oldest will be going back to public school, which is fucking stupid, but whatever. Wife and I have no say in that matter.

    Point of this?

The fortune cookie slip taped to my desk says: "A problem clearly stated is a problem half-solved." Words to live by.

I spend at least half my time trying to clarify the problems that land on my desk. My time might be better spent distributing copies of that fortune cookie slip.

This rings very, very true to me right now, as I try to get a clear explanation from a customer of what, exactly, they think my staff should be fixing. First I get a communication blaming the problem on something that won't even occur until next week. Then, in response to my questions, I get another communication stating that "everything is lost". Everything? Did the guy's PC disappear...? Finally, after four go-arounds, I get a decent definition of the "problem", which is not really a problem at all, but a known consequence of a process my staff sometimes has to run.

(Of course, there's a lesson for my staff here too, which is to clearly explain what they're doing to fix a problem, and how to mitigate the side-effects. But that's not a grump...)

So I'm not the only one going through this? How hard is it to bring the girls home showered and fed?

Spent yesterday afternoon chugging golytely to clean out my gut for a colonoscopy this morning. Nothing but food commercials to torment me. Can't really bitch about this morning, nice nurses, doctors, just an IV, rolled on to my side and then woke up about 40 minutes later. Life in a small town, the hospital was only 5 minutes away. Check in the box complete for this 50 year old, I guess I get to wait ten years for the next one. I'm still a little lightheaded, maybe by the late afternoon I can ride.

Interesting to watch. I've been tempted to start one for no reason. Just to see how much money people would donate.

Jack hole tried to rear end me with his pickup then pass me on the inside of a wet hairpin this morning. Dude, just gently let me know you are there and I will get out of your way.

    Also: BART delays.

I got buzzed by some a-hole in a lowered Honda with a fart pipe yesterday on Pinehurst, he came within a foot of my elbow.

There was a report a week or so ago about a deliberate attack on some cyclists also on Pinehurst. A white Ford Fusion made 3 passes at some cyclists, running them off the road and throwing something at them.

When I ride out in the foothills in 'neck country, all the drivers are polite.

This was a silver Ford Ranger. Passed me, then stopped to yell at me.

It's funny, I haven't had any trouble in a while. Maybe I need to stop riding on Thursday mornings.

Met with our (as seller) real estate attorney yesterday who wanted to let us know that a "closing date" is only an approximation and that it could take up to 2 weeks to actually close.

    WTF?

We want to sell our house. The buyers want to own it. They have a mortgage already. This is not a foreclosure and the property does not have anything weird that can usually hold up a sale/closing. We have completed the inspection, appraisal, and land survey. The house is in a great neighborhood and the buyers already live in our town.

First the agents almost screwed it up. Then the lawyers tried to screw it up. Now it appears the title company can do whatever they want on their own timeline.

Everyone has know about the sale for at least 60 days. Can someone explain to me why this cannot happen on the agreed upon date? Why is so difficult to get it done?

Nothing! I might be totally oblivious to things happening around me but Im feeling great.

Woke up extra early to add 10k to my morning commute and try a new route - feeling sore but energetic, and I haven't even had my coffee yet.

Sorry grumps- not going to happen today unless the preggers wifes' heightened senses and hormones try to throw me a curve ball tonight.

My experience is that everyone - everyone in the real estate business has a "we can do this at the very last nanosecond, and if that doesn't work, we can postpone it, and then deal with it at the very last nanosecond again" mentality, and they're adept at letting you feel all the anxiety about it.

Even with cash buys, no mortgage, amenable sellers and buyers, all of that, it's amazing how so many people in the business (I'm looking at YOU, title companies) won't do anything at all until the very last possible moment, and not communicate at all with you about what the hell is going on. It's like they sign some sort of weird non-communication pledge.

Last day of school. Oldest appears to have failed science for the year, as well as the reading section of the state assessment. The year came down to a final test that was failed horribly. We studied and studied all weekend. He was getting it. And able to explain it clearly. Then he went to his dad's for 2 days before the test. <50%. Corrections could have been done, which would have brought the grade up to passing, and as such, passing the year, but he didn't do them. His dad signed off on them, though, acknowledging that they had been completed. In other words, his dad said "yeah, the corrections were done. I saw them", but they weren't. And the oldest lied about it. To him and us.

Wife and I gave everything we had to help him. Other house appears to have not. It's been a struggle and, in my opinion, has given way to nothing other than disappointment and aggravation.

The younger boy will finish the year with As & Bs. Both, however, will be pulled from this school and placed into public school. Officially. Why? "Because it'll be less stress". The youngest's counselor says that the youngest needs stability. When the father decided to move here from Dallas, it was for "stability." When we agreen to go to this new school, it was for "stability." This will be their 3rd school in 3yrs.

    Over it.
