Two words.

Walking home from the train last night, encountered an old buzzard, his crone companion walking their enormously fat pit bull the other way. The cur waddled in front of me, looked up and planted itself. A park district fence to my right and the aforementioned couple to my left blocked off any route around the dog.

After a seconds long stand-off, the crone finally noticed and offered – ‘he’s friendly’ but otherwise made no effort to get the dog out of my way. My reply - ‘I’m not.’

The two then hurled a shitstorm of invective, tired grievances and a whole host of other unintelligible utterances. All the while the dog stood passively looking at me - I would like to think anyway - yearning for liberation from its crazy owners. It finally gave up hope and moved in front of the still yammering olds. I proceeded without another word or glance back.

At least three minutes of my evening wasted.

After questioning the integrity of the head coach of the youth tri team I help coach (volunteer, mind you) in front of a couple other people, I was told that I don't have the team's best interests at heart, and was removed from the coaching staff. I have a whole host of issues with this head coach, this is but one, which revolved around the use of a school district track without official access and permission. He told me that he wouldn't go through proper channels because (1) he didn't like to be told "no", and (2) he didn't want to have to pay money to use the track. If this was the first time I'd brought it up, I could see his point. But this was something I brought up LAST SUMMER, and again as we headed into this season.

I gotta give him kudos though -- this was the most prompt action I've seen out of him for anything in the two years I've helped coach this team. I wish them the best of luck.

It's been a great day so far.

I got my hip grazed by a side view mirror on today's ride. While in a bike lane. By a police officer, though not driving a police car. I didn't go down, but as you can imagine it pretty much scared the crap out of me.

We're moving to another building at work. Nobody on my team is happy with the new location and facilities isn't really helping matters. I'm seriously spending time today discussing things like chairs and whiteboards.

And most importantly, my father in law had another major surgery yesterday to fix things that didn't go as well as planned in the last major surgery. He was just weaning himself off the meds and starting to become coherent and logical again. Now he's back in pain, back on morphine, and back in the hospital.

This is the same as the last two gripes. I'm playing intermediary between insurance co, drug company, doctor and specialty pharmacy. No wonder the stuff I'm on is like sending a kid to NYU.

I just put on a new Pave CG tubular after 5 years of flat-free service from the previous one. One teeny shard of broken beer bottle flatted it. Some sadists on this list taught me how to *really* glue on tires -- and one nightmare, 4 blisters, and 2 broken fingernails later, it's off and I'm installing a new Vittoria CX.

Unlike the Pave, the CX is not straight at all. Either the base tape is centered nicely, or the tread center is, but not both. Lots of $ should buy both.

Next stop, either more Paves or Veloflex.

My surgically repaired ankle is chapping my ass, if that's physiologically possible. We had weather change in the Bay Area and, for the first time in four years since the surgery, it really gave me trouble for a couple of days.

I did what I usually do, which is talk to my retired doctor buddy. Now I have to engage with the doctor system and nobody's taking new patients. This is a bona fide independent grump so no push-ups for me.
