With all this “hate doing dishes” talk, my dishwasher crapped out. It’s old, not really worth repairing.
My gripe? it’s on old “short tub” model, not made anymore. When our kitchen was re-done 10 or so years ago, the guy doing the work put our dishwasher in the corner of an “L”, and when door is open, it clears the fridge by 1/4”.
All traditional (drop door) models have long tubs - doors that will not fully open. I can’t cut into the wall studs (outside wall) to push it back further...
My only option now is a drawer model, made only by 1 manufacturer, and will cost $1,200.
At least my wife will be happy...
you're not the lord of the flies
oldest child has had some horrible bloody noses and has had issues breathing through his nose. always clogged and he's scared to blow. last weekend he had a bloody nose so bad he puked up 3 large-ish grape-size clots from swallowing. also came out of his tear ducts. if you have never seen blood well up like tears, it's fucking scary. few days prior we actually took him to an ENT. got the results a couple days ago.
vessels need to be cauterized.
adenoids need to be removed.
deviated septum.
awesome, we got a fix. and his biological father has him on great insurance.
JKLOL.
we also learned that the deductible is $10,000.
Gah! I quoted the wrong thang. To be clear, MaineMike's approach-approach conflict is the women vs. the sailing.
Not the dishes.
My grump: Lots of rain, and newly-discovered leaks in the new house.
To the former owners of said house, as per the disclosure statement: You are lying sacks of shit.
i hate the financial markets when they don't work and everyone is stupid and fuck everyone
but then it's fun when things work
how will i get killed tomorrow, i wonder?
My son has decided to go to ITT Technical Institute instead of a real college for IT. I've read some pretty lame stuff about them but his mom has been pushing for it and they laid a slick sales presentation on him, now he's convinced. I don't know how hard to push him the other way, how much to let him have his own agency and how much to point out that all his mom's ideas turn out to be shit.
I don't want him to get out of school with $25k in debt and a worthless diploma, but would be be any better off at a traditional college? Fuck, parenting is hard all of a sudden. Can I just go back to teaching him to poop on the toilet?

could be worse, my son is going to be a math major
I think you are right about ITT. We were talking to an IST student here at Penn State, and I'm not sure he's going to be any better off. There is some demand, but it's setting yourself up for a life of wage peonage. At least with a college degree you have options. In 4 years, the computing landscape is going to be totally different, so what he learns now is going to be obsolete. I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect the IT folks with a future have a comp sci degree and 3rd party certifications. Not sure ITT is going to provide that
As someone hiring IT people, we would ignore ITT, other for-profit technical schools and even some "more reputable" paper mills like university of phoenix. The magic letters, however, are CCNA, MCSA/OCP, and the like... It feels really poor to say it being on a university faculty, but for IT spots certifications, demonstrable skills, and experience are way more valuable than the sheepskin. Speaking strictly about employment here... you're likely to be a more complete human with a quality degree--it just might not be a good purely financial transaction.
My related grump is our now 9 month old open position for a mid-level IT person here that we can't seem to get anyone even trainable to apply for. I'm tired of picking up the extra work...
Some eff hole in a big black SUV almost hit me this morning on my way to work.. even though though I was wearing a florescent-pink jacket and was shining a really bright headlamp at him.. still cut me off.. My commute is no longer as safe.. traffic is getting bad in my little paradise.. Portland got too popular. Gentrification sucks. Stay away from my city.
I worked with a few guys who graduated from DeVry, which is similar to ITT. Those big lugheads couldn't even read correctly or talk using correct sentence structure. Sorry this doesn't help much. But on a more serious level - education in general starts with you and your family. If he can talk correctly, you've won the larger battle. He'll pick up skills where he needs to in the real world.
One more grump for me.
I'm 25% of a 4 man start-up. I'm also the only "software developer". Everyone else has "soft skills" like knowing people in the industry we are marketing too or just flat out lying about their value to our tiny ass startup group. This is the last fucking time I'm getting into this arrangement again. And if one more guy asks when we are going to be done or complains about a broken link on the website, I'm gonna slam my money down on the counter like Kramer on "the bet" episode. I'mmmm Ouuuut!

Blow up and pin a picture of M. Bartoli on your wall. When you achieve that position, stop. Until then, stretch, ride, stretch, ride, eat less, and ride more.

See, he had been planning a comp Sci degree from SFA University in Texas until this ITT thing. He's a smart kid, and pretty motivated, so I'm hoping that he will figure it out. I've expressed my concerns and asked him to check it out fully, but I feel like I should let him stand or fall on his own. Sucks, cause I don't want to see him set back right out of the gate.
I guess I could always teach him to weld:)

The folks above are spot on about getting a 4-year degree (preferably comp sci) + industry certs to open real options in IT. I run a web engineering team within a large software/tech company. Even our entry level tech jobs require some formal training. And a no 4-year degree means the resume won't make it past the recruiter. On the flip side, if he goes down this path he'll end up working in future-IT...I'm not sure that's a great place to be.
