Re: Bottle boss reinforcements: necessary?
[QUOTE=Gattonero;579846]Small frames are blessed by braze-on FD, however this may limit the choice in case of triple ch/set or groupset.
Worst case scenario, a few washers (or even Presta valve washers) would step-away the ST bottle cage with minimal fuss
Yes, I'm aware of those new fangled (joke) braze on front derailleurs but the person that was paying me to make those frames doesn't like them. So as any good contract builder would do I built the frames to the spec of the person writing the check. My comments weren't about how to make this or that work. It's just a comment of what I did in the past as a contract builder.

My pet peeve along these lines are upper rack bosses that cause the rack strut to go THROUGH a road caliper break on common generic racks. We keep having to dremel away cutouts on the left strut or use seat collars with integrated bosses.

90% of my diamonds are used on contract builds, too.

Yep, I got that.
In fact, thought of "triple" ch/set thinking of Rivendell

Unfortunately, under 50cm frames there isn't much to do, the bosses will be too low no matter how high you put the on the stays: the re. caliper is right in the fire line.
In such case, seat collar with bosses are the way to go, altogether with Tubus racks that do offer plenty of adjustment. This is what I've always found, sometimes things have to be fiddly

Great answer, Nova doesn't list thickness for their star reinforcements.
No prob to figure it out, thanks anyways

They aren't that thick. They just need to do a little reinforcing.

Re: Bottle boss reinforcements: necessary?
Are they necessary? Nope. But I like them. Hole drilled, reinforcement and boss inserted and brazed up in one shot. Silver fed at the boss/reinforcement inteface and it flashes out to the edge of the reinforcement. Nice and clean. Always done before the tubes become a frame.

Re: Bottle boss reinforcements: necessary?
Good stuff, Dave-
The one I show above is the little Silva one, non stainless, and is fed at the boss with bronze.
I will add that for the bikes without I usually use a slightly larger headed boss for more contact area. I doubt it matters, but that's what I do. This one is also regular steel, and bronze brazed.

They are thin. The stainless ones that I use are .5mm, the ones like in Eric's photo are .6mm.

It's all the little things to ensure longevity that makes our bikes stand out.
I use the H2O mounts from Design Engineering with the large heads for max contact on everything, and I silver braze them with stars, and use brass without.

They are what they are.
STAINLESS STEEL REINFORCEMENT FOR H2O BOSS :: REINFORCEMENTS :: H2O BOSSES :: STAINLESS STEEL SMALL PARTS :: BRAZON/SMALL PARTS :: Nova Cycles Supply Inc.
I know that's over simplified, but true at the same time.
Simple enough?
I guess you can make your own out of .065"

I wish they'd leave them off and just spec the collar on smaller sizes, honestly.

Or you can have your machine shop make them out of .049" stainless because they have a shit load of little pieces of that from other jobs and have them cut you out about 5 pounds worth of them in different sizes. A while back my guy had a bunch of .058" stainless sheet and he used that. That stuff was a bitch to drill a hole in. So I asked he not use that anymore. But beyond that I've never given much thought to the thickness of my reinforcements.

Asking about thickness because - yes! I'm going to make some, thanks for the answers, was I too lazy to bust out the calipers and figure it out last night - yes again!

mmmm, I'm a lazy man... the fleur de lis ones are already coming as all in one piece...

Although the main reason I went for those was about giving a bit of flourished detail and keep the magnified lense eyes equiped people distracted...
