The W&OD bike trail into Washington DC is ice packed and deeply rutted that I cannot bike commute to work. I like riding Nokians, but this would be just plain dangerous....

We got 6" of fresh snow on Monday. A large high school in downtown Chicago is surrounded on 3 sides by playing fields, all of which, 3 days after this snow, show zero signs of anyone having even walked on them. Whereas (allowing for the possibility that the gates may be locked) back in my day, there would have been all-school snowball fight/ rumbles in the amount of snow we have right now. Times change...

The most maddening part is that they chose to go strictly by points in making selections, then justified that choice to go strictly by points as a non-choice: "no discretion was involved." Bull. The choice not to use discretion is itself an act of discretion. Take responsibility USST.

The dipshits that run my place of employment are talking about making everyone wear hardhats and steel toed boots because it will lower their insurance. There is absolutely no need for that in our shop. I've worked places where you needed that shit, and they pay a hell of a lot better. Insurance culture in this country is out of control. Why can we not accept that life is a contact sport and you don't really need a big fat check after shit happens?

you stole my grump, except I'm still commuting. I can commute on surface streets/roads here in Cletusville, but I sure would appreciate it if they cleared a couple of blocks of bike path next to a road that has people traveling 20mph over the 40 mph speed limit. It really isn't that bad to ride on that road, but it's really stressful. And I'm not sure what's up with not clearing the bike paths in town. Before they painted the lines they cleared more of the road. Cletus expects you to ride in that lane, damnit.

The only place to clean a bike when it's this cold out is in the tub. The white tub. The cleanup didn't take that look but cleaning up the cleanup took 45 minutes and I'm still finding little grease smudges in dumb places.
