Had a funny car dealer moment this morning. The local Porsche dealer is in the same building formerly occupied by the old SAAB dealer and I had yet to visit as a Porsche owner. It used to be the case when I would drop off my 900 SPG for service, I had the most exotic car in the shop and the service guys would smile and say "right on man!" When I dropped off my Boxster for service this morning, I strolled out into the same service bay I used to frequent years ago to find a 959 up on a lift. Different world, totally different totem pole.
This one?

That would look better in beige, I think. Less conspicuous.
I missed that exhibit and now wish I'd gone. Now when I go to the MFA I'm forced to look at dudes' representations of real things. Not the same.
GO!

Show and Display statutory amendment to NHTSA importation rules. Limited to 2500 miles per year road-going, after compliance with EPA rules. Additionally, NHTSA doesn't require FMVSS compliance if the car is older than 25 years, so a 959 can now be legally driven 2500 miles per year, so long as it meets Federal emission standards.

This is great news! I can finally buy an F1. 2,500 miles at 200 mph is 12.5 hours of use per year. Of course, there's no rule against having more then one.
I had the "waving" discussion over tequila the other night with a friend who drives a '79 SC. He believes that, if I initiate the wave, I could expect the following:
Air-cooled 911 drivers: Will always wave back.
Cayman drivers: Will always wave back.
Boxster drivers: Will probably wave back, depending how into their cars they are.
996 drivers: Will probably wave back.
997 drivers: Might wave back, depending on if they've had a Porsche before.
991 drivers: Probably won't wave.
Cayenne and Panamera drivers: Probably won't wave.
I thought he was overthinking it and was playing up imaginary schisms between models and owners. But then my wife pointed out that among Subaru drivers, only WRX and STI owners wave at each other. I only drive her WRX occasionally and I'm always caught out when an oncoming STI waves. I haven't had a chance to test my friend's waving hierarchy as I haven't encountered oncoming P-cars yet.
All I have to add right now is that I am jealous Nick bought a Boxster to go with his Subaru and I bought a VW wagon. Maybe he will let me ride in it so I can cement the idea that I made the wrong decision.
It must vary by locale. I've had my WRX since August and have yet to see a wave from another WRX/STI and there are plenty around here. Maybe they are waving and I can't see it because of their bro tints, or they're not waving at the older guy in the unmodified car. Whatever. I got my fill of the wave game in the Miata.

I've been thinking about it, but if it happens it probably won't be in the WRX. When swapping summers for snows, two of the summer tires were punctured, and one tire had two punctures of its own. Those stupid tires only have 1700 miles on them, so I'm not too keen to replace them or spend the money on another set of wheels/tires yet. So, I may sign up for a Mustang Experience to get some instruction and a bit of track time.
Are you planning anything?
NASA has their 2014 event dates published already.
I have mixed feelings about the format, but I LOVE the cars, especially this one:
