Re: WTF? Terrorist killing in Woolwich, London.
Two quotes come to mind:
"He believed society was too sick to survive." (Ghostbusters)
"It is in your nature to destroy yourselves." (Terminator 2)
I don't get it -- what could drive some one to do something so heinous. Is life so meaningless?

I work in a secure forensic psychiatric facilty and this is doing "crazy" people a disservice.
The scum that did this are religious fanatics - in the eyes of psychiatry they just hold extreme views
and are therefore not "crazy"

I don't know. I think you have to be nuts to hack a guy to pieces in broad daylight and then commit suicide by cop. Oi with the religion again. It's an easy excuse for them and us.

what is nuts is the cops were aiming to stop the attackers without lethal force ,then the emergency services try to save the two somalians lives...fucking waste of an air ambulance if you ask me it could be saving someone worth saving...i would have aimed for the head everytime
makes you wonder if the world is broken already...and what will be left of humanity

Re: WTF? Terrorist killing in Woolwich, London.
Personally I agree about the air ambulance. Sounds like no cops arrived for quite a while though since they were waiting for firepower.
The states/society we're trying to maintain dictates that you do need to try to take people alive, get information out of them, presume innocence, etc.... This is a serious outlier. They probably want them alive to question them about the usual schtufff.

Hey it's still better now (probably) than it was during ancient Sparta, Rome, Byzantium, Middle ages, Ottoman Empire etc..

The world is a much less violent, deadly place than it used to be, and this kind of fanatical violence is less common too.
Your opinion is more than a little ironic in this situation.
GO!

This doesn't jive with reality. 9/11, Fort Hood, Boston Marathon, numerous failed / foiled attempts.
These acts of 'fanatical violence' (your term) seem to definitely be increasing in the world I live in.

But it is reality. Not to downplay the horribleness of any of the above, but the world is an incredibly safe place to live in right now, and getting safer by the day. Believe it or not, even public schools are safer than they were 50 years ago, strictly speaking (i.e., in terms of number of people killed in them.) it's just that everything is so publicised now, and with the advent of the 24-hour news cycle, it's all death and destruction and raping and murder all the time.
I've told people that, according to simple crime databases, children are less likely to be kidnapped in 2013 than at any time since records were being kept. And literally nobody believes this, numbers be damned. Same with just about any other type of violent crime.
By most objective metrics, the world is a very safe place right now. However, this doesn't jibe with people's reality for subjective reasons (and, believe me, I'm not exempt from feeling shit-scared every now and then.)
Perhaps doesn't speak to violent religious fanaticism, and I don't know of any number (if there are any), but, again, I can't imagine that there's more of it now than at any time in our history.

Incredible.
I am at a total loss to try and understand the reasoning behind an attack like this.

^^^^^^ talking about religious fanaticism. That what this thread is about. And as I said above, in my world it's increasing.

which part was a feigned understanding
a man cuts a blokes head off in the street
then give a tv interview half way through
if this is normal in your neck of the woods then fair enough

Re: WTF? Terrorist killing in Woolwich, London.
WTF with people watching indifferently with their hands in their pocket.
And WTF with people recording a video of those barbarians, letting them spiting their fcking message.
No picture, no sound, would have been better. At least.

This thread was not "about" religious fanaticism. It (d)evolved into a back-and-forth of religious fanaticism but the OP was simply expressing his or her incredulity and shock about a very, violent event. In fact there was no mention of religion, besides the embedded links, until the fifth post. I certainly respect your comments that my comments didn't directly address your post; fair enough, but this is certainly not a thread "about" religious fanaticism.

The actual attack was made in the name of religion (by a supposed islamic jihadist ,perhaps media sentionalism) however the interview /statement the machete weilding perpetrator left no doubt about this stating "tonight he wished to start a war on british streets"
