Where do you wish you were?

More than be any one place, I think I would like to have more of the world at my disposal. I really like Lucca, Italy in Tuscany. It is right near decent mountains, an hour from Florence, a bit shorter to Pisa and the coast, reasonably close to Cinque Terra, and lots and lots of cyclists all over the frickin' place. But I also like the north Atlantic coast of the US, the Pacific Northwest, the Canary Islands, and I really enjoy living in NYC. Plus I'd like to visit Stockholm periodically, Iceland, Patagonia, Ecuador, Columbia, etc....

I don't really envy any person. I have a good life. But the closest I come to envy is when I meet someone who has the wherewithal to pick a point on the globe and go there to spend a chunk of time and learn about it on a more intimate level than a couple week's vacation.

We looked at property last time we were out. Off the grid. 11,000ft. up.

but only accessable by snow machine for 4-5 months out of the year. ;(

i'm telling you people...Bellingham, WA is it.
Pacific Ocean, San Juan Islands, cascade mountains, winter storms, beautiful summers, great mountain and road riding, Seattle & Vancouver right down the road, alpine switchbacks and flat farm roads, salmon fishing or bear hunting, big rock at Squamish or big water in Tofino, skiing at Baker in the morning and drinking IPA at Boundary Bay in the evening.

The wife and I shopped locations hard for a long time and Whatcom County Washington is the place.

+1 While its got a pretty much permanent economy, some of the best riding anywhere I've been, and anything you could want to do, I'm out of here ASAP for points west again. I'm gonna try and figure out a way to live/work in AZ in the winter and somewhere else in the summer. Half my stuff, including all my reefkeeping stuff is still just outside Denver.

The DC area is like a giant black hole with a large accretion disc. It'll suck you back in. You may get enough escape velocity to get back out, but it'll keep sucking you back in. (especially if you grew up here :wave)

What is bad about Boulder? I live in Australia so have no idea what it's like other than it looks like a kick ass place to live if you like riding and climbing. I know you can't do that 24/7 so obviously other amenities make a difference.

The first word I thought of is pretentious.

Its called the 'people's republic of Boulder' for a reason. If you tend to lean leftwards, you'll fit in. If not, there's always Westminster, Lafayatte, Loveland, etc.

That video that was floating around the site for a bit with the moron honkning his horn in an SUV? That was right outside Boulder.

Can ya tell I'm not a fan? I like pretty much everywhere around there except Boulder.

I've lived lots of places. San Diego, Salinas, Morgan Hill, Flagstaff, Tucson, NoVA, Cheyenne, and Denver in the last 15 years. They all have good points and bad points. Lived in San Diego for the first decade, then moved about for the last 5 years. I'd go back to Sandy Eggo in a heartbeat if I knew I could make a living there *before* I went back.

South east France in the foothills of the mountains maybe.

That's what I am thinking. Great back roads for cycling. Pyrenees and Alps close at hand. Atlantic ocean for water sports. Paris culture a few hours away on the TGV.

Love Italy, Italians and all the history. Along with all the Roman, Medieval and Baroque architecture, Southern Italy and Sicily arguably have the best preserved Greek ruins.

On the other hand the litter and intractable bureaucracy would drive me insane. France is close enough for frequent visits and much more orderly.

Huge riding scene, awesome downtown with incredible public spaces, nice weather, pretty women, close to the mountains and the beach, good food, plenty to do, strong economy, affordable housing you'd actually want to live in, college town, has a Trader Joe's, and is served by Southwest Airlines. That pretty much ticks all my boxes.

I spent 4 or 5 days there a few years back. Food was GREAT, downtown area was great. Wife was discriminated against ... and there are some undesirable areas right outside of downtown (but what place doesn't have that?)

Overall - cool place. Wife didn't want to move there though unfortunately. I loved seeing people park at the front door of the airport and just walk in. It was also the end of May and super humid. The hottest feeling 80 degrees I've ever felt.
