Default What I learned this week during jury duty.....

This week I served on federal jury for a civil case andlearned some valuable lessons.

Themajority of case’s evidence was a retrieved via emails and Facebook posts.

The plaintiff won the case. Needless to say, I am glad that I try not to criticizepeople on a public forum nor knowingly state incorrect or inaccurate information.

I donot want to delve into the details of the case, but I just want to inform my friendsor people that I share a public forum with, that please be polite and precisein the language that you use. If you arenot polite or precise in the language that you use, it might just come back tohaunt you.

Last time I served on jury duty (2 or 3 years ago?) I sat on a civil case, and the biggest lesson I learned from that experience was "If You're Going To Waste A Lot Of People's Time With A Frivolous Lawsuit, At The Very Least Hire A Competant Lawyer And Try To Gather Some Semi-Plausible Evidence To Support Your Position"

Oh, wait, this is a publc forum, am I allowed to say that?

I spent my last couple years in DC embroiled in multiple (largely baseless) lawsuits and counterclaims, filed in multiple states, between my employer and a client, and it opened my eyes a lot as to what kind of stuff the lawyers can and will drag up.

Everything is discoverable. Internal, innocuous jokes made over email that are even somewhat related to the matter at hand will be read to you in your deposition as if they are a smoking gun. As such, work email is now for work only. If there is doubt about anything, pick up the phone.
