Unkown painters whose work you own, or would actually buy for the house

SOme of the Jackson Hunt stuff is interesting. I love his style, just not his subject matter (NY Rooftops are not my thing). I might follow his road trip to see what other things he comes up with.

but I gotta say, I love her style. I wish I had known about this for my HS Honors Art class where my year theme was movement. I never got close to doing anything this dynamic.

Her work is pretty cool. As I remember, they are installations. She does the work somewhere else, and then the poured components are lifted, moved and reattached in their final location.

Making something that looks easy to do is often the result of skill. I've been an artist most of my life. I could probably make something that looked similar, but not something that look as good or as facile. She has a really nice gesture to her work that reminds me of cartoons. Like you said, Dr. Seuss. Or Kenny Scharf. That gesture isn't likely to be easily replicated.

And a good percentage of the creative act is not just coming up with an idea in the first place but putting it into practice effectively.

There's some pretty nice stuff mentioned here.

We have more than a few works from an old (former) friend of my wife's, who seems to have disappeared into NYC obscurity - Google turns up nothing on Jason Weller. We've got paintings, block prints, mixed media and even a pot from him. He had some real serious painterly skills, but did nothing particularly hip or stylish. Over years of trying to break into the NY scene, I don't think he got anywhere. I hope he's doing well out there, whatever it is he's doing these days.

...and he had a pretty cool old bike w/a chrome plated frame. I think it was French.

My Sister in Law in South Carolina has been doing a series of "Monster" pieces pretty unique and I am sure she would do some cycling themed pieces if so desired.

Originals are beyond the unknown painter price range, but you can get a lithograph for decent prices. I read some of his books years ago and then stumbled upon his gallery in Livingston Montana. Talked the wife into getting something. Not the one we wanted but one we could afford. If your read any of his stuff -- particularly writings that mention fishing and hunting equipment -- you'll recognize a Velocipede Salon attitude.

Not painting, but sort of. My wife's friend from childhood, so I am biased. I had a heck of a time finding any pictures that show her work well. She's a fiber artist - art quilts, rugs, and pretty much whatever she decides to try. She studied painting but for some reason took up this media. I have two originals by Carlos Cancio. He was my housemate 30 years ago when I was just out of college and he was a struggling nobody, and he bequeathed two paintings to me when he moved away. I've carried them around with me for three decades, torn between my desire to hang them somewhere (but always in apartments that didn't quite have the right location for large canvases), and my more mercenary desire to sell them off now that Carlos has made a name for himself.

Great friend of ours Anne Neely is an amazing painter based in Boston, MA. Largely abstract landscapes, increasingly abstract over time.

Love that the majority of the art we have is done by people we know. It's a wide mix.

Old thread, but Josh Keyes stuck with me and I noticed that he's in the latest Hi Fructose (Vol. 24.)
