Default Unkown painters whose work you own, or would actually buy for the house

honestly, I dont think I could live in a world without art.

I love art gallaries. One day, when I have a bit more cash, I will fill my house with it. Today, I make do with my parents artwork, a good bit of my own, a cool poster of Andy going over di Passo in the snow, and a bunch of awesome bikes.

But one day, when I have a couple houses (one for me, and one for secondary income) I plan on really buying up some art.

Right now, this is the dude I like the most.

    Fredrick Stephens.

My favorite part of his art is that as you turn down the lights, certain colors just POP* and you begin seeing a whole new painting.

He simply takes a very modern take on very traditional landscapes. Plus I effin love cows and he paints 'em.

If I had the chops, I would paint just like this. Anyone else keep there eyes out for certain artists not found in major galleries...folks selling art that we can afford to own, not just admire.

    Share the love.

    Awesome. I love Hermann's colors.

Its hard to paint bright like that.

My wife and I buy photography. Last year we bought a couple photos by Jerry Spagnoli from his "Local Stories" series. He uses a very large piece of color film - 8x10 or 16x20 - in a homemade camera with an ultra-wide angle lens. The images are pretty astounding for their combination of detail and blur. The images are large - 30x40 or larger.

I guess the cutoff here is painters whose art one can purchase for 5k or less. That usually implies uknown, but not always.

SO, cool thread update. Since my fiance and I are going so low key for the wedding (just a dinner for 16 family members, no ceremony), we have decided to buy ourselves a peice of artwork for the house. It wasn't my idea either. It just happens that we have both been thinking about this the last week or so. So any local VA/MD/DC artists are most welcome.

A good friend of mine, Philip Juras, is an excellent painter. He primarily focuses on southern, GA, SC landscapes. We own two of his paintings.

I'm too broke or busy or minimalist or transient or uneducated to buy anything from these guys. But one day...

    Jackson Hunt (painter):

    Emil Alzamora (sculptor):

Emil's work has so far graced the cover of 3 Esque records.

Not to keep pushing photography, but my sister-in-law does fine work and lives outside of Richmond VA. Her best work is regionally influenced and is about the water & land & animals.

And if you want to buy undiscovered artists, two galleries in Richmond to check are 1708 Gallery and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond (more of an educational institution but with a gallery and sales.)

Other galleries to check are Reynolds Gallery and Page Bond Gallery. While both of those galleries have plenty of work over $5000, they also cater to people who may be interested in beginning a collection of art but are interested in quality vs. fame. Good places to go. No snobbishness. They'll listen and show you what they have.

Heide Trepanier from the Reynolds Gallary.

Pretty cool stuff. I am not sure if it makes it past my rule of "must not be able to do myself."

but I gotta say, I love her style. I wish I had known about this for my HS Honors Art class where my year theme was movement. I never got close to doing anything this dynamic.
