I'm not sure I understand your objections. "Lowly" just means "of low station in life." Are we going to pretend that there aren't people who are of low station in life? That the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge aren't pretty well set up? That this isn't good advice for maintaining the humanity of two people who could very well devolve into "let-them-eat-cake-ism"?
FWIW, the admonition is biblical not just in its sentiment but in its diction. "Better [it is to be] of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud." Proverbs 16:19, KJV
Isn't this precisely the attitude they're being implored NOT to adopt?
I honestly can't see the objection to what is some very good advice -- for any of us.

Speaking of the "Lowly" even the British commentators thought it was a Scottish appointment! Well, you can never accuse HRH E of being politically correct over Northern Ireland, let alone anything else in her realm.
