NAHBS attendees! Beware of "Fair Guide"
Just got a letter in the mail, it looks like they must have gotten the NAHBS list somewhere. They send a form asking you if your information is correct, then ask you to sign a form and send it back. By signing and sending you are agreeing to pay them $1717/year to be listed in their show guide. The company is listed in Slovakia, with a US address in Illinois.
I filled it out thinking it was for the NAHBS guide and started reading the fine print... During these last couple weeks of show preparation, my head has been in a fog, I could see how this might slip through the cracks.
Heads up.

i NEVER fill out anything that i didn't ask to receive. and unfortunately the more successful NAHBS becomes, the more crap i have to wade through every day.

Re: NAHBS attendees! Beware of "Fair Guide"
Has anyone else been getting blasted with non-stop recorded phone messages from Texas companies offering a free credit card scanner? As soon as I completed my paperwork for a TX sales permit the calls began. I am on the National Do Not Call registry but either there is a loophole or these companies simply do not give a shit. Either way, I have been averaging about half a dozen a day.
Also, in case anyone else got hit with a letter from TX indicating that you are also on the hook for Franchise tax in addition to collecting sales tax, there is a form (AP-114) that you can complete and send back requesting an exemption. No guarantee of anything but they (The TX Comptrollers Office) says it is worth a shot.

Is that form posted on the net? I'll happily pursue, but if you already have a link let me know. The women I spoke to on the phone was very nice, but didn't indicate the AP-114 option.

Tim,
I spoke with Tanya in the Comptrollers office about my "nexus in Texas" for the franchise tax. Applicable only if you have more than 1million in gross sales. At the end of the fiscal year, they will send a final permit discloser, if sales are less, no franchise tax is due and they will cancel the account.
Phone calls for merchant services...got 2 more this am, ughh.

Re: NAHBS attendees! Beware of "Fair Guide"
The phone calls are getting old, tiresome and bothersome. I don't see going back to Texas any time soon if this BS keeps up.
It's nice to know that someone is making money of off our attendance. Apparently the state tax office can sell our information to anyone it wants regardless of our privacy or "do not call status."
Thanks for the tip on the 1 million in gross sales Rody, I received that letter as well and put in the pile of "things to look at."
Also, Matt, I got the guide mailing as well and just recycled it without even looking at it; I'm glad I didn't invest the time. Like you say, my heads in a fog as well just trying to get the stuff done that I know I need to get done.
