Rand-ho! New travel bike for a client that loves his Winter so much he needed a travel version. Look for this (and a couple of others) at this years PBP.
I was asked to make a longer version of a Trek seat cap/post. Using a existing carbon post as the top portion I managed to roll wrap over a mandrel and the existing post stub. Start.jpg
I used a UHMW mandrel calculating the thermal expansion to get the finished ID correct. Mandrel.jpg
There are 9-10 layers of 300gsm woven carbon with about 50% of the layers at 0/90deg and the others at -45/45 deg. Wrapping.jpg
After the layup was complete I used shrink tape wound tightly on the lathe before curing in the oven. Shrink Tape.jpg
This is the result after post cure sanding. There were some cosmetic wrinkles in the upper layer of carbon as a result of the shrink tape shifting during cure. The part will be painted to match the frame so it was not an issue. Finished.jpg Installed.jpg
