    Default The county fair!!!!!

That is right, the county fair started today.! I went last night, before it opened, and Wow! It is gonna be a good one.

Some of you may remember my post on monkey wrestling at the county fair, no such luck this year.. Thank you PETA, but tomorrow is the mule pulling. Starts at 7:00 usually goes 'til the early morn.. Sadly, i am supposed to race bicycles saturday.

Gotta figure out which is priority.

Your priority is funnel cakes. And anything else that is fresh out of the deep fryer

I lived in Sacramento for way too long. The California State fair is all about fried food served up in brain melting heat.

Trust this. If there is a booth serving, "brain melting heat," I will try that as well.

We have both, demo Derby is the finale. Rodeo is Sunday, mule pull tomorrow. Luckily the mule pull and the chicken show are at the same time. I watch the pullin' gal watches the chick's. Big hit is the pig racing.

Actually, Pork McElhinny is the singer-song writer. But the big deal is, "mountain man," from the TV show 'Duck Dynasty', sadly that is at the same time as the mule pull, so the crowd will be huge.

I am joking about none of this. I will be there, I will learn to post pics. I take photos, just can not put them on here.

Are you going to string along any tractor salesmen? My girls always have to endure me sittin' on a new tractor at the fair.

At the Indiana state fair they used to have mile flat-track motorcycle racing. Awesome. Grab some local corn-on-cob, a porkburger n' fries, and a frosty and watch the boys bang handlebars at high speeds....all accompanied by the aromatic pleasure that is castor oil. Iowa state fair...let's just say I didn't know you could do THAT with butter. Skowhegan state fair up in Maine...the oldest continuously operating fair in the country. I was recently pleased to find out that my hometown back in Pa. still holds it's annual grange fair, although apparently some things have changed similar to what RHR mentions; PETA, etc...

That is pretty funny, but, i know every dealer here, and they know me. Every time i see those shiny, new, beautiful beasts sitting there, i start thinking that maybe it is time. Although, i have 2 tractors that are only a couple of years old. Start talking air-ride seat and shuttle shift, and i get weak in the knees.

^^^ It's only a string along because I have no need for a tractor in my current life. I grew up on a little Kubota and wanted one ever since. Something about tractors...

There's a point in Plato's Republic where, as I recall off the top of my head, a guy walks past an execution. The passerby tries not to look, but eventually he can't contain himself and he rushes toward the gory scene physically holding his eyes open to drink it all in.

That explosive admixture of attraction and repulsion pretty much sums up my relationship with county fairs.

    Arizona State Fair.

I have more of these. They were my annual neighbors when I lived in Phoenix. At night, we were lulled to sleep by the lullaby of mooing cows. One year we woke up to a rooster on our front porch.

I live about 2 blocks from our county fairgrounds. The term "walking taco" is very apt description for the shorts that most of the teen age country western girls were wearing as they walked by my house in their cowboy boots and hats.

    Mule pulling, clearly.

We don't have Mule Pulling, we have Heavy Horse Haul, which I assume is the same. I can watch that by the hour. Something about watching those big beautiful animals doing what they do.

I go from there over to the animal barns and hang around the cattle. I watch the sheep, oat and pig shows. Love to watch the horse shows in the small ring. The Peruvian Stepping Horses are wild.

alright, friday started out with work, longer than i had planned. No lunch, and a 2 hour ride i was starving. Went home, took a shower, had a gin and tonic, and man i was on the hunger train.

Loaded up all the family and headed to the fair.! So when i walked thru the gates, with 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' playing in my head, and the sunshine creating a halo over the food court. A sign simply read, "We ain't got nothing healthy, we just own a fryer" Seriously. I told my wife, "here is some money, i gotta go."

I had the Putnam county "po' boy'," It was frog legs and catfish, and damn it was good. A few other odds and ends, part of a 'funnel dog' which was a hot dog soaked in funnel cake batter, spiral tater on a stick.

Photos to come, i got some good ones.

    Beautiful people
