Why can't there be a good can opener ?

Why are you guys overthinking it some much? When non easy opening cans were the norms I used to have the classic can opener. More often than not, the simpler design is the better design. Those things last a lifetime, work with any can and take very little room in the kitchen drawer.


It only takes 15 to 20s to open a can with those, why would you make it more complicated?

Probably none of us right now, but some of us will eventually have problems with arthritis or other hand issues that would make that teeny "army opener" nearly impossible to use.

I had this same problem. You need the can opener made by J.A. Henckels.

Zwilling, who owns Henckels, makes an identical one too.

Takes a little practice to use it, but once you understand how it works, it's pretty damned incredible. It removes the can top but doesn't leave a sharp edge. Go all the way around the lid, lift up and then turn the crank the opposite way to spit off the can top. Highly recommend it.

I use the Henckels one as pictured and it's the bees knees. Easy-peasy and I love how it doesn't leave an edge.
There is no comparison to traditional openers, imo.

Growing up on Army Posts around the world we used to think K-Rations were the neatest thing. If you didn’t learn early on how to use one of these you were left hungry. It was a rite of passage.

The P-38. I have one in my tool box, tackle box and in the kitchen. That and a church key will take you far in life. I had one on my key chain most of my life... not sure why there isn't one there now?

Similar story here. I never knew I was ambidextrous until my elementary school teacher made me pick a hand and "stick to it" rather than switching hands. LOL I did get a set of left handed Ginger scissors mostly to stop other people from using my good scissors ;)

I spent three years getting chastised for writing wrong (and switched to left handed writing in third grade). I still use scissors and frisbees right-handed, and can live with wrong-handed can openers, but archery, shooting, darts and anything involving a ball is a left-dominant pursuit. Left-front braking makes sense to me as well. All the motorbikes are backwards....
