    You're right, and I suspect it's because there is a coating on the interior that could be damaged. Just the idea of some fragile interior coating puts me off. With or without a brush, it's bound to come off at some point, and you just end up ingesting it.

    If there is no coating, you still ingest plastic.

    I was in charge of cleaning and sanitizing bottles and breast pump equipment when my kids were that age. Small parts were washed with soap and water and then sanitized by steam by placing in a special plastic bag with the right amount of water and then microwaving. It occurred to me this would be a fine method for water bottle lids. I don't sanitize them after every use, but I keep a few of the Medela steam bags around and steam them at irregular intervals. They say they're only good for 20 uses, but not in my experience. You can buy them at a pharmacy, big box store, online, etc.

    Slime is just extra protein. Calibrate your diet and you'll be fine. Not to mention exercising your immune system so its good and robust might be a good thing.

    I just stick everything in the dishwasher and don't worry about it.
