Posting Images on VSalon With Flickr

Okay, here's how it goes.

Step 1 - Open your image in Flickr. The important part of the screen is lower right of the image. Click on the share button - looks like a bent arrow.



Step 2 - In the pop-up window that appears over your image, select first "BBCode". Then select image size from the lower selection bar - 1600x1200 works pretty well and is the typical aspect ratio for most iPhone (etc.) photos. The line of code that appears in the BBCode window after you select size is your target.



Step 3 - Using whatever combination of key strokes or mouse maneuvers you like (I prefer right-click then selecting "copy" from the pull-down menu) copy the entire BBCode line. The line is longer than the window in which it appears, so you have to "select all" or double-click select or whatever to get the entire line, including the part hidden by the size of the window.



Step 4 - Back on VSalon, open a new Quick Reply window in the thread of your choice (Ride Reports for example,) type your message (I went riding and...) and then paste the entire line of BBCode that you copied from Flickr into the message window (not necessarily in that order - however it works for you.) Now you are done and can click "Post Quick Reply" and your image should appear along with your message. The benefit here is that the image is not actually on VSalon servers. It is still remotely hosted on Flickr and just displayed in your image. So not only do you get a nice big image, you also avoid upside down images due to coding conflicts and you help keep the VSalon servers clean and tidy.

Optional: If you don't want the Link-Back tag appearing after your image, you can delete the section of BBCode as shown below (basically everything after "[/img][/url]") before clicking "Post Quick Reply". But that's just OCD and not necessary.

We need to figure out how to do this via mobile devices. Flickr does not like the idea of giving up BBCode on iOS. Not sure if it's the same for Android, etc. Really frustrating.

Yeah, that would be valuable, but unfortunately Flickr hasn't been interested.

On my Android device I use the flickr.com site. I can click on "Use Desktop Site" in the options and then it works like my laptop and the upload and share functions are the same.

You have to click "Go Advanced" and click on the Instagram radio button and then paste in the gobbledeegook code in the Instagram link for the post (in your case, that is CPaultgJyjt) and that should do it.

Yep, that works. Uses the static URL for the image rather than creating a hyperlinked image. Used to be free Flickr accounts didn't have access to static image URLs, but now that I think about it, there probably aren't free Flickr accounts any longer. So your method works just as well, especially if you want to post images but don't want people checking out the rest of your Flickr feed full of hilarious cat photos.

I never understood the images from Flickr that, when placed here, also linked to the host page. That takes the viewer away from the thread in question. None of my images are hyperlinked. Unless, of course, it's in the classifieds and goes to a stand alone For Sale post.

I think that function originated in Flickr being associated with photography and photographers rather than just photos. So the purpose of the hyperlink with the BBCode version was exactly what you describe - to take the viewer away to your Flickr feed so they would see how good a photographer you were. A lot of photographers used Flickr as a portfolio manager. That's changed though. Most people use Flickr as a support for Instagram or some other form of social media. Or as social media itself. So you're right - the hyperlinked image form using the BBCode is probably a bit unnecessary, except that I've found some people find it easier to manage.
