"Electoral" maps are only accurate for the way government is apportioned, and not accurate for the way Americans vote.

I like the 2nd map but how would you graphically conceptualize that there is likely not a precinct in the United States where Republicans would receive a majority of black votes. You'd remove every dot of red from the map, right?

perhaps. i'm not that interested in identity politics, i think the urban/rural and higher education divide is a solvable policy problem.
Dems need to figure out a better way to define their constituency than by race if they want to win over more Americans.

I see the disconnect: I don't tend to concern myself with things that aren’t broken. On the other hand we have an awful lot of historical damage to acknowledge and ameliorate, and a broad spectrum of contemporary, even existential, challenges we absolutely must address or suffer serious consequences.

Other First World Countries have been through a lot more social evolution than we have and it shows in important ways.

They BOTH have and will continue to cheat whenever possible. That's what I meant.

So you should be even MORE interested in ensuring that voting districts are set up to prevent as much cheating and gamesmanship as possible. Right?

My state invented it. Both sides have done it.

Do you folks have anything better than to argue against anything I post?

not really. first of all, I'm not arguing against just anything you post. You aren't that important. but gerrymandering is one of the largest problems facing our democracy. even if it didn't move the needle very much on overall representation in Congress it makes districts less competitive across the board. Uncompetitive districts lead to extremists being elected.

And Latino men are especially averse to identity-based framing.

Winning Georgia is likely coming at the cost of winning Texas.

I can't quantify it but it looks to me like the Republican Party is vastly more active in gerrymandering than the Democratic Party.

Recently, in Georgia and Texas it was naked, totally in the sunshine; the modern DP has done nothing like it AFAIK.

In Florida some of the district shapes are hysterical...and mind you, 20 or so years ago my middle brother managed the team that wrote the GIS code that the FL legislature used explicitly for re-districting (and often gerrymandering). Aside from managing and writing some of the code, my brother is the guy that the state legislators called for help in figuring out how to use (or manipulate to perverse ends) the system; in his experience, and there is nobody on this Earth that is more honest than Linc (Lincoln, as in cousin of Abe), the Rs were orders of magnitude more obviously trying to pervert the system than the Ds. Linc is genetically incapable of lying or taking advantage of anybody.

And it makes sense from First Principles, too; changing demographics don't favor the Rs, and the Rs want to hold on to '50s, '60s, Leave it to Beaver America...which actually would be nice for whitey but it simply isn't possible; not at all.

You can think what you want but unless I am ridiculously mistaken the RP is vastly more invested and effective in voter suppression and gerrymandering than the DP. There is no equivalence.

And with that I shall crack open another beer and enjoy the porch, view of the woods and breeze being provided courtesy of Eta.

@GrantM I'm curious what policy solutions you see.

The desire of the Trump base to privilege the white-male-straight-native born-Christian segment of the population above all others seems pretty incompatible with the meritocratic world of the present and future.
