    Default Bridge building

I just received this video link from my son. He works for a company in London that produces one-off projects for architects and engineers. It is a time lapse documentation of the production of a new footbridge for one of the London parks. After construction it was moved across the country for hot dip galvanising. There are not many companies with a zinc tank big enough for a bridge.

Great stuff. Watching the sun shadows move across the stage gives a lovely sense of time thru out the day.

Brilliant design, build video to record it! Just fantastic.

I should have said that it is a swing bridge designed to be supported by a central pivot.

    An update.
The bridge in position in Crystal Palace Park. Shown in the un-connected position. It can be swung on the central pivot to provide access to the island, which is normally closed to the public. Photo taken this morning by my sister.

Lots of physics at work in just building, coating and transporting the bridge. We all dreamt of building bridges when we started our structural engineering program, but few head in that direction when they find out that most bridge engineers don't design bridges, they repair them! Nice video and very clean fab shop.

Thank you for those comments! I grew up very close to Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge. At a very young age I remember my father, also an engineer, explaining to me the principles of the construction and how the tide was used to raise it into position. One of my father's first jobs was to run a water main across the river Tamar attached to the side of Brunel's bridge. As far as I know he never built a bridge.

Of more interest to me, is how long it took to stage the material and get it to the site. The design of the bridge “fits” perfectly within its setting.
