In the Northeast we've come a long way from spikes and buckets - now it's evacuated lines, vacuum pumps, huge collection barrels. Not too far away from where I live there is a milk tanker in a hollow collecting sap. And miles and miles and miles of tubing. The woods last month looked like something a giant steampunk spider left behind (here in New Hampshire, the season's over).
And this is nothing compared to what happens in Quebec. They take collection to the next level.

When my mom graduated from college in 1939 she had planned to go to England and ride a bike around on her own for a couple of months. She asked my grandfather if it was a bad idea with war clouds building. He said "The worst that could happen is you don't go and regret it." She went and she had a wonderful experience before the world went to hell.

My son showed me this on Instagram, which I don't do. I recall the trip, which was epic, but not that moment. I hadn't ever seen the image before.
