To do the vertical change I use the rule of thirds lines in the viewfinder to make sure I have between 25% to 30% overlap. To stitch the photos together I either use the "Photo merge to panorama" function in Lightroom or for bigger images like this a panorama program called PTGui. PTGui is faster and allows for tweaking of the alignment. Alignment can be an issue in images without sharp defined edges like the out of focus areas and sky. The photo above was 30,000 pixels across on the long side before cropping and downsizing for saving. Needless to say, I need a bigger hard drive. The reason I am doing this is to play with the depth of field. If my calculations are correct this image would be like using a 32mm f/0.35 lens. An impossible lens to make.
Thanks for explaining. I may have a new winter project.

There are a lot of cedars in this particular arboreal forest.

But I do think that one is a white cedar as you say. Although, I have never seen one with as developed a “river” pattern on the bark.

At the risk of pushups for posting a second picture in a one picture thread, this tree intriques me. This photo is a young one. They are usually single trees although I did see one stand of 6 or 7 of them that were mostly mature and quite tall. They have leaves that turn to a very light brown in the autumn. The interesting part is that the leaves in the dried out state are very very thin, almost rice paper-y. And they do not fall off after they turn brown. This photo doesn’t do it justice but they are really quite striking against the snow.

I think that it’s a beech, Jon. You really notice them around here in the late Fall through early Winter.

Beech or a hornbeam. Hornbeams commonly keep their leaves through the winter. I think the longer leaves make this one likely to be a hop hornbeam. The name comes from the flowers that resemble hops. But it is sometimes difficult to identify saplings, even with the leaves.

My first reaction was "beech" but J's got a point with the hornbeam.

Took the kids into the city today and hit in their words, “five monuments!”

The wind at the base of the Washington Monument was blowing them all around the plaza.

We talked a lot about how nice it is to visit your country’s capital and walk around in peace and enjoy it, because that is not the case everywhere these days.

(I left out the part where if we lived in the Falls Church of Ukraine we’d likely be in separate countries right now and dad would be looking up Molotov Cocktail recipes online rather than talking bikes…)
