    pool is open

Saw through the trees a deer run one way and then about 5 seconds later run back the other way then in between me and the deer a gold and brown streak of coyote. Then nothing. If I hadn't looked up from watching my footing on some ice, I would not have seen any of it.

    Re: coyotes (and foxes)

Background: I live in a heavily wooded area in the far western suburbs of St Louis. Every now and then when I've driving home late at night I'll see what I'm nearly certain is a fox, not a coyote, crossing the road about half a mile from my house. I'm guessing fox mostly based on the smallish size. A quick web search tells me that in our area we have both foxes and a growing coyote population.

Question: Often at night in the medium distance I can hear quite a bit of yipping, sometimes accompanied by "barking" (definitely not dog barking). Is the yipping more likely to be foxes or coyotes?

Coyotes. They have these variably complex clans led by a dominant female and her mate. Not like wolves. More like roving neighborhoods. And periodically they have a block party. Usually when someone gets a deer or other vittles.

Foxes sound a bit like chihuahua with a pack-a-day habit. They also have a kind of scream that often gets misidentified as a fisher or a bobcat. But they are in ones or twos and a bit shyer, especially when there are coyotes around.

    Coyotes are so frickin cool.

Pete, that's like a still shot from a Scorsese film. Wheels turned out so after they shoot the capo in the confessional they just jump in and gun it out of there.

I was going to say it reminded of a cover of a Blue Oyster Cult album I seem to remember from the 70s.
