Those close to Mad Mike said that he really didn't care about the whole flat-earth thing, but it was a convenient means for him to get some meager funding for his real passion - steam powered rockets.
What a waste.
That makes more sense, logically. I mean, he could've chartered a small plane if all he really wanted to to was get up high enough to see some curvature.
Was it a waste, though? I struggle with this because at some level I think people who do these things know and accept the risk. He lived and died as he wanted, and that's OK with me. Except for the cost to the people left to clean up the wreck.
GO!
I hope that he packed his own chute, so that someone else wasn’t responsible, as that could lead to some heavy guilt.
